ok........could not resist checked mine out

SHARON

Gender: Feminine

Usage: English, Biblical

Other Scripts: שָׁרוֹן (Hebrew)

Pronounced: SHER-ən (English), SHAR-ən (English) [key]

From an Old Testament place name meaning "plain" in Hebrew, referring to the fertile plain near the coast of Israel. This is also the name of a type of flowering shrub, the rose of Sharon. It has been in use as a given name since the 1920s, possibly inspired by the heroine in the serial novel 'The Skyrocket' (1925) by Adela Rogers St. Johns.

hahahahaha

and I thought it was from Chigwell and your mate had to be called Tracy hahahahahahahah

Well I do have a friend called Tracy and I live 5 mins from Chigwell, but I dont own white stilletoes and I do not own a short skirt hahahahah

That's nice, you have a rose named after you.

i have a book about a mistress named after me lol.

You guys are so silly! :P But I luffs you.

Nich, it's pronounced saah-naah. I know it's spelt funny...stress on the "sa" is same as the "naa". It really should be spelt Saana but eh.

Mine apparently means "art" in Swahili!

wow! im glad i read through old threads. how would i have known ms. magpie's lovely name? and i think its great to pick your own middle name since you will be shedding the family name that you longer want. (good for you. makes a powerful statement, i think.)

but, i clicked on this thread because i am curious about name changes. i think that my name is going to stay the same. but jamie actually has a situation similar to yours, ms. magpie, in that he wants to rid himself of a name that links him to someone he doesnt want to be associated with. but, his is a last name.

i explain it in this AOS thread as follows:

this is an issue for my fiance too. he would like to change his last name (by removing this biological but not-so-nice father's name from his official name. (X) he has always used his mother's maiden name (Y) and goes by jamie Y (rather than the jamie Y X that appears on many of his documents, including passport, birth certificate, etc).

his last name is considered to be a two-name last name (Y X), not a middle name (which he doesnt have at all) and then a last name.

im unclear as to WHEN we should deal with this. or which one is the easiest.

at the POE (I-94 as jamie Y)?

on the marriage license ? (can we just put what we would like, within reason?)

through the VT state probate court? (legal name change)

at the SS office?

when we submit AOS and EAD?

once we get the GC?

jamie has traveled, banked, and lived most of his life as jamie Y. he included a letter of explanation about the usage of different names with the I-129F, we never had any issues come up during that part of the process.

just trying to think ahead in case i can get things started.

(its pretty encouraging that i am 'looking past the interview' to the future because i think that means i am daring to hope that things will turn out just fine. : D good for me. march has been a great month for approvals, hope we round it out with 2 more!)

I think a lot of this depends on the laws of the state you are in and the one you get married in. From reading around on the VJ board, several people have been able to make changes to their name on their marriage certificate at the time they registered the marriage, however when we got married in Colorado the only change they would allow was for the woman to go from current surname to Husband's surname anything else had to be petitioned through the courts. In Texas (where we live) you have to be a resident of the state for 6 months before you can petition so I shall likely just leave it for the time being and look into it again when the six months is up.

im unclear as to WHEN we should deal with this. or which one is the easiest. I'm just giving a total opinion below with nothing official to back it up, so here goes......

at the POE (I-94 as jamie Y)?

Is that the name you listed on the petition? If so that's the name that will be on his visa. Is it also the name on his passport? You can't just ask for a name change at POE. That is only the CBP deciding if you have the credentials to enter the US.

on the marriage license ? (can we just put what we would like, within reason?)

He will have to show id, like his passport, and they will issue the license in the name on the photo id.

through the VT state probate court? (legal name change) That's a very good legal way.

at the SS office? SSN will only be issued in name on his I-94, ie visa and passport

when we submit AOS and EAD? It's sorta like starting over with a new process, so I guess you could apply for him as Jamie Y but would need something to show a legal name change to go along with it. (Can an alien/non-resident in the state of VT even do that?) And it would probably be a really good idea to write an explanation of why the name change. A woman, Mary Smith who marries Joe Jones would apply for AOS as Mary Jones, but her marriage certificate would indicate the former Mary Smith is now Mary Jones by marriage. Not sure for a male it would work that way unless he took your name after marriage, which isn't the norm, but hey, why not?

once we get the GC? I have no idea how to get a green card changed. Haven't ever researched that. But with the "game" we play to get all these immigration steps done, and in a process that's so heavily dependent on identity, police clearance, FBI name checks, etc, you are going to have to jump through alot more hoops and perhaps experience much more scrutiny when you start changing names. But if it's important to him, I'm sure it's possible if you don't mind your process possibly getting delayed while they sort it out.

jamie has traveled, banked, and lived most of his life as jamie Y. he included a letter of explanation about the usage of different names with the I-129F, we never had any issues come up during that part of the process.

<absorbing information and being grateful for the input>

im thinking we may go with the VT probate court way. (i know, i cant figure out when he would be able to file for this in a VT court? might call legal aid? not sure yet.) i dont want to complicate things, but i want jamie to be able to be jamie Y if that is what he wants. i know him as jamie Y and it sticks in my craw (i dont know what a craw is? sounds like a very pointy jaw.) that he totes around the bio-dad's name for official purposes only.

anyways, thanks again. very, very, very much appreciated.

Sanaa Aria

Aria: An expressive airy melody.

I may have been lurking more than I should to post a name suggestion like that, but I think it sort of fits for you from what I've read, Magpie...and I couldn't resist posting the suggestion as I decided I liked it.

Of course, the accent's all wrong in the way I'm thinking it in my head - more like ar-EE-ah instead of AR-ee-a like I think it's actually pronounced.

That's so lovely, Nich...I'm so glad you let me know this thread was still going! I had stopped tracking it because my middle name is a pretty boring topic of conversation. I really do like Sanaa Elena...it's got a ring to it. :: blush ::

Aria, Maria, Elena...oooh, it's so hard to choose! I'm leaning toward Elena I think...

Magpie (or Sanaa Elena/Maria/Aria, maybe...).
