So, we were so happy and relieved to go and pick up my husband's IR-1 visa today. I had everything all planned out in my head. I was going to call my mom as soon as we left the embassy and tell her the great news and then we would go out for a celebratory lunch.

We open the passport and dun, dun, duuuuuun...my husband's birth date was wrong on the visa. The embassy official was not happy and acted like it was our fault. He tore open our brown envelope to "prove" to us that we must have listed the wrong birthday on our papers. When he saw that we hadn't he pointed to another embassy worker, as if to blame him for the data entry error. I was not happy with his reaction and it lead to a rather unpleasant exchange which resulted in me walking away from the window while my husband finished things up. I wish I could go back in time and not get so upset but in that moment I just couldn't help it. When he asked my husband why I was so "anxious" my DH said "because this is a big deal in a person's life and she wants everything to go smoothly"....the embassy official responded "well, that's not my problem". That's when I walked away. My husband was so angry with how I acted but seriously I was just so upset about the way he was treating us. I thought today was going to be a fabulous day and instead it turned out in the gutter.

ANYWAY, the embassy official said "she shouldn't be upset, the visa is totally approved we just have to cancel this one and reissue another one which will take about a week"...(GAH! One day of waiting is seriously like a month, I thought we were done with the waiting!)...so my question is, does this mean everything has to be sent to Washington again for a name check and final approval or will they just issue the corrected visa and call it a day? It doesn't much matter either way but I'm just wondering how long this will all take.

Thanks and sorry about the rant!

Thanks Kaffy. So the name check is still valid even if they were checking with the wrong birth date? I was thinking they'd have to redo the whole thing since they were using the wrong info the first time, or no? It's just that the computer system at our embassy has been acting up lately so the name check which normally takes two days took three weeks because the data is not transmitting to and from Washington properly. So, I'm hoping we don't have to go through another name check and wait another month!

Embassy man acted like it was a big deal, he was like "ughhhh, now I have to CANCEL this visa and issue you ANOTHER one on a different page"...

Oh don't worry. They will just re-issue a new visa with the correct details. It should not take one week. He might have delayed re-issuing the visa just because he was going through a bad day and your response didn't help the matter.

Good luck

Thanks. And yes, I keep kicking myself for letting my feathers get ruffled. I definitely fell for the bait. It was just that this has been such a long, exhausting process and I was so looking forward to this being "the" day...so for the date to be wrong (which didn't really bother me, accidents happen) - but for him to blame us for it and be really unfriendly really just put me over the edge. Oh well, can't turn back time.
