So the admin started yesterday. She is not bubbly yay!! she's quiet, she wasn't greeting parents until i told her that she had to do. That's awesome, i really didn't need someone nicer than me to make me look bad

Good morning everyone!

Let me go ahead and apologize if I make any typing errors as the computer I am on sucks!!

I just have to get this out:

I'm an English teacher here in Brasil and I got a new student today. I mostly do private lessons (not affiliated with any school) but last week I started doing some classes at one of the English schools in my area called Skill to make some extra money and fill in some empty time while my fiance is at work. Anyway, so yesterday they call me up and ask if I can start doing private lessons with this woman everyday M-F from 9am til 11 (starting today). I said yes, they gave me the books and warned me that she is very temperamental.

So today I get here not knowing what to expect from this lady. They told me that even though she doesn't speak English very well, she thinks she does....awesome. So she finally shows up 15 minutes late and we sit down and start introducing ourselves to each other. Her English is not bad, but she definitely needs to learn more before she takes the profiency test she has scheduled in May. After about 20 minutes of us talking, she tells me that she hates studying with a teacher. She says she likes to study language by herself and really hates studying with a teacher.... I just smile and nod. Then she takes these other books out of her bag and tells me that she wants to use these books (from a totally other third party) as well as the ones from our school and would that be okay with me. I said that was fine. Anyway, then she keeps on and on about how she hates studying with a professor and that it is very important that she learns English really quickly. So then I ask her if she would like to start on the books and she says ''No, I have to go today, but I'll see you tomorrow''. #######?? She was here for like 45 minutes and the class is supposed to be 2 hours? And anytime I corrected her she seemed to get quite mad. And when I suggested that she provide me with a writing sample tomorrow so that I could see her level, she said she didn't need to do that because she wrote fine already. Seriously?? Because you don't speak that well.

Arg....rant over. I have a feeling this lady is going to be quite the test for my nerves.

No, they don't make everyone take lessons before the test. It is not a requirement at all. But many people need to take lessons before the test so that they can actually pass.

And I have no idea if I'll be paid for 2 hours or not! I hope so! The boss lady isn't here though so as far as she'll know (I guess) we had a 2 hour lesson. But I'm supposed to be paid by hour, so who knows.

I am totally sympathetic for those that do not speak English that well. I don't speak Portuguese that well! I can understand Portuguese and speak it pretty well, but I know I make mistakes all of the time. And if I started taking Portuguese lessons, I would be there to learn and would appreciate the teacher telling me how to say things properly. Like I said, I teach lots of different levels -some beginners and some advanced- but don't sit there and tell me you are an English genius when I can hear that you are not.

Anyway, I'm going to forget about this before tomorrow and start teaching her and hopefully she will see the error of her ways and that I am here to HELP her speak/write/read English.
