15 Companies That Might Not Survive 2009

Sirius Satellite Radio. (SIRI - parent company; about 1,000 employees; stock down 96%). The music rocks, but satellite radio has yet to be profitable, and huge contracts for performers like Howard Stern are looking unsustainable. Sirius is one of two satellite-radio services owned by parent company Sirius XM, which was formed when Sirius and XM merged last year. So far, the merger hasn't generated the savings needed to make the company profitable, and Moody's thinks there's a "high likelihood" that Sirius will fail to repay or refinance its debt in 2009. One outcome could be a takeover, at distressed prices, by other firms active in the satellite business.

I can only hope this one goes titties up. No more Howard Stern in my house or in the car. Thank you lord!

Six Flags just had a winter job fair here in Chicago. Lots of folks with advanced degrees lined according to the WGN report I remember seeing. Pretty tough times. But yes... ticket prices are close to $50 for one day's admission as of last summer.

Disney is around $70 or so I hear now.

Is that the one in Gurnee? Ha, took my step daughter down there when she first came here in August, only warmed up to about 50*F, started raining, so we left at noon, but recall the ticket prices were very steep. Recall taking my kids there, could buy tickets a Jewels or some grocery store for half price, was around seven bucks a kid, not bad, but still spend a vast majority of the day, waiting in line. That was a drag.

Yep... same place. Wow... 50 degs and still huge lines... well... it was summer.

Last time I went my boss was there with his fam... they left before noon. Fools went on the silly Batman Dark Knight 'ride'... which was the lousiest 2.5 hours of line life I've ever had.

Then there's the nickel and diming with that accelerated line BS... pay more for that. No thanks.

Six Flags is starting to seem like so many other companies that have run themselves to the ground. What will save them, though... is popular appeal for fun diversion from harsh times. People will continue to spend cash for fun rather than for improvement.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

The malls are all packed here, all the time. Are people just going out of habit but buying less?

that's the homeless people trying to stay warm.

Bhahaha.

My adopted baby brother is severely handicapped. He can still walk & is tall enough to ride all the adult rides. But because of his handicap, we get a special pass whenever we go to amusement parks that lets us skip the lines.

Blockbuster. (BBI; about 60,000 employees; stock down 57%). The video-rental chain has burned cash while trying to figure out how to maximize fees without alienating customers. Its operating income has started to improve just as consumers are cutting back, even on movies. Video stores in general are under pressure as they compete with cable and Internet operators offering the same titles.

Hate these bastards and good riddance. They made a lot of money on late fees and Netflix is kicking their butt with a wider selection and cheaper prices.

Netflix is great and quick too.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Wal-Mart sales up in weak retail sector

In our area the kind of people you would never ever have seen in a Walmart 1 to 2 years ago are now shopping in them. These shoppers 2 years ago wouldn't look at walmart and would look down at walmart shoppers, like they are worthless. Funnily enough they have gone all mum. The number of new Mercedes and BMWs in the car park is quite comical.

all the blockbusters closed here because they charged $4.50 to rent a movie for one night

I just use redbox for $1 a day for new releases.

I love those machines. We had a vid shop at the top of our road in Newcastle that just had 5 of those machines in it. The guy that owned it was hilarious and so gay. I would go in there just to talk to him because he was so flaming and hilarious.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

I also think Netflix and the Redbox thingies drove Blockbuster down the tubes. I mean you can get a movie at one of those machines for about a buck while it costs over $4 at Blockbuster. And Netflix is always a lot faster than Blockbuster, I'm all about getting my movies in the mail ASAP, Blockbuster always took its sweet old time with that.

Diana

I initially used both of them and noticed that if I sent back 3 bb movies, only two would register. Then it would take a number of days to receive the next movies in your queue.

Netflix on the other hand, always receives the films I return the next postal day. The following day I receive the next films in the mail. Never had any issues.

They're popping up everywhere. Redbox sealed the deal when they placed them in walmarts.

Reminds me last time we went to Disney as a family... the smallest sibling had just gotten over the chicken pox... so the marks were on their way out when we went. * Good times, no lines *

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I haven't been a fan of Six Flags since Astroworld was closed down and demolished. I used to love riding the Texas Cyclone. :D

As for Blockbuster... I prefer Video-on-Demand. The prices are roughly similar, but no late fees and you don't have to drive anywhere.
