I am travelling on a K1 visa and I was wondering if there are restrictions on my fiancee adding me to her bank account once I get to the States. Will I have to wait intul after the AOS process??

It will depend on your bank- many require a SSN before they will add you to an account.

In our case, they let us open a joint account (USC and me), with a copy of my passport, but asked I submit the SSN asap.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Ditto. Lots of people having problems with this without an SSN. My bank added me using my husband's SSN and my passport, and then when I received the SSN I informed them of the new number. You do need to escalate the issue to a supervisor on up if you start to hit roadblocks. It seems to be the only way to get anywhere here. Good luck.

I have a similar question about my fiance opening an account w/ a Chase Bank branch in Turkey. If he opens a Chase account in Turkey can he use it the same as if he had opened here, once he arrives?

No, he won't be able to use that account. Even though the Bank's are called the same they are seprate entities. Due to local financial laws.

I had absolutely no problems getting a US bank account and credit card setup - in fact I had it all done before I even set foot in the USA, or even had the visa/ssn!

Would definately recommend HSBC for all your banking needs,

5-13-09: Green card approved.

6-24-09: Received green card.

8-13-11: Received 10-year green card.

2-21-12: Sent N-400 to Dallas Lock box.

7-18-12: Naturalization interview (passed!).

I'm new to these forums and hope I am not out of line here.

I agree with the bank account as soon as possible. I would also suggest the use of a debit / credit card. To me this beats writing checks and all that but one must still balance their account, etc.

Also, I'd suggest everyone look into opening an ING Orange on-line savings account. It pays better interest than any bank account and is electronically linked to your bank account. Just takes a couple of days to transfer funds back and forth electronically.

You can open an account with HSBC from the UK if you are an existing customer of HSBC or First Direct (costs £100 unless you have a HSBC premier account) however it will take a minimum of 6 weeks to sort out before you leave the UK. If its a shorter time period they will tell you to go into a local branch once you get there and offer to do a letter of introduction for you. Unfortunately for me I left it too late before I leave and they have no branches in Texas :(

When I was in the States at Christmas we went to my fiance's brach of Bank of America to get the Affidavit notarised, and I asked there if I could be added to his account and they said that I could do it with my passport and UK driving license, they did not mention SSN. I hope that they did not give me wrong information, but I plan to get my SSN as soon as I get there
