I am flying into Washington Thursday February 12th on a K1 visa. I am planning on brining just over $10,000 with me. Is there any limit on how much you can bring? Is there a tax liability on cash that you bring to the States? Do I need to declare how much I am carrying at immigration?

Also do I need to bring anything else with me apart from my passport (obviously) and the package that I received from the Embassy when I received my visa.

Any help apprciated.

A simple google search brings up this from the CBP site:

You may bring into or take out of the country, including by mail, as much money as you wish. However, if it is more than $10,000, you will need to report it to CBP. Ask the CBP officer for the Currency Reporting Form (FinCen 105). The penalties for non-compliance can be severe.

“Money” means monetary instruments and includes U.S. or foreign coins currently in circulation, currency, traveler’s checks in any form, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form.

No tax liabilities and, as Laura+Tom says, you need to declare it. Personally, I would not carry that amount of money on my person..... I transfer my monetary assets, electronically, as and when I need to.

And, no, there is nothing else you need bring. But I would recommend you bring items which you won't be able to get here in the US like certain pharmaceuticals and food items.

Have a great trip. :)
