Hi everyone. I'm wondering how many of you are in this predicament or might know someone that has been through this. My husband was born in the US but had his daughter in Colombia, mom is Colombian also... and now he wants to bring her. What exactly does he have to do to bring her here? Mom is all for it by the way. Thanks for your help!

Is he a US citizen and spent most of his time in the USA? If so, his child might be a US citizen too, and you can simply get a passport for the child:

Look at the "Guides" located above for getting Mom an immigration visa.

Dan should report the daughter's birth to the US embassy in Bogota to establish her US citizenship, and the embassy will issue her a US passport. She does not need a visa to go to the US. http://bogota.usembassy.gov/service/births-abroad.html

I agree. Try to find out as much as you can on getting his daughter her US citizenship through your husband. If it's doable then it's just a matter of filing paperwork at the embassy. If not, then no problem, he can just file an I-130 for her.

Also, remember that she will still be a Colombian citizen so her mother will have to give her permission to leave Colombia every time she travels from the country. But it's pretty easy otherwise.

Hi everyone! Well my husband's first two years of life were spent here in the states and he went back to colombia. At fourteen he spent about a year here then went back and he came back to stay, (in the states) at around age 19. Since then, he's been here. So as i was reading up on the Embassy's page it says he had to have lived in the states at least 5 years before the child's birth, which he didn't. He came and went and like i said, finally stayed at 19. So is this going to turn into an immigration issue where he has to claim the daughter, paperwork and all that jazz? Or just go to the US embassy and get her US passport, because i heard that she needs a Colombian passport also.... this is so confusing!
