I dont mean to burst your bubble, but it is a lot more expensive and harder to start a business in the United States than in the Philippines. You need a lot of money to get started up. Good luck. The first thing you need to do when you get your ssn here is to start building a positive credit history and working so you can qualify for business loan, once you get here there are organizations that will help you for free to navigate the system.

I know many people who started with very little capital and grew a business. Money helps of course, but not neccesary to start a business in USA.

Right! Of course a good credit standing and a good name counts a lot too. But for a start, you are pretty much on the trial and error side. You can't make it big right away the first time. So enjoy the wins and may be losses... But keep going.

By the way, do you know any organization that could help me navigate the system for free?

Here in Iowa there is a Small Business Administration (SBA) . Here they are located on the campus of the University of Iowa. http://www.uiowa.edu/

Its a free service to people trying to start a small business. They help with business plans and provide information on groups that can help you and even point to local banks that assist start up companies. I worked with them when I started my winery and they helped me to build a business plan and set starting pricing for my wines. I found them to be really helpful.

I would expect there is a branch of the SBA located near you. By all means stop in and speak to them.

Not all businesses require permits/licenses. If it is a retail business, you will most likely require a seller's permit, if your state has sales tax. If your business is within an incorporated area (city limits), you may need a local business license. Certain professions are require licenses.

I live in an unincorporated area, and the state agency that regulates my business does not require a license. I do have a sellers permit, so I can collect sales tax, and purchase merchandise for resale without having to pay the sales tax.

Hope that helps a little bit.

It is a local government distinction. If your business is located where there is city government, you are in an incorporated area, and subject to their regulations. If your business is not located within any city's boundaries, then you are in an unincorporated (provincial) jurisdiction

Mr Bill,

Thank you. :)

I talked with my husband and he confirmed that we are in a city.

Since you will be opening a business within a city limits, you can contact the local Chamber of Commerce for information on starting a business within that city. Also, most chambers have a registry of members, that would get the word out to other businesses in the area that you are in business as well.
