NYT: Republicans Voting for Stimulus Package Are Being Patriotic

By Noel Sheppard

Created 2009-02-07 12:25

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard...being-patriotic

Roughly five months after Joe Biden informed the nation that paying higher taxes is patriotic, it now appears radically increasing government spending and the federal debt is as well.

At least that's what one gets from a New York Times piece [1] Saturday applauding a Senate compromise on President Barack Obama's stimulus package.

Here are the paragraphs where patriotism was prominently mentioned (emphasis added):

The deal, announced on the Senate floor, was a result of two days of tense negotiations and political theater. Mr. Obama dispatched his chief of staff to Capitol Hill to help conclude the talks and reassure senators in his own party, and he called three key Republicans to applaud them for their patriotism. [...]

Mr. Obama called Ms. Collins and Mr. Specter, as well as Senator Olympia J. Snowe [2] of Maine, another Republican expected to support the deal, to acknowledge they were acting against pressure from their party and, one official said, to thank them for their patriotism in helping advance the bill at a critical time.

Do we know that's what Obama said to Collins, Specter, and Snowe? Isn't that actually what an unnamed official said the President told them?

If the President really did say this, couldn't the Times have gotten anyone to go on the record?

Regardless, if this report is true, and patriotism now includes our leaders spending money we don't have, our Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves.

After all, if the current financial crisis was caused by corporations and individuals borrowing money they could never afford to pay back, how can the solution be for our government to do the same thing?

On the other hand, if liberals are right on this issue, then why don't we encourage near-bankrupt corporations and individuals to reciprocate? Let's advise all ailing financial institutions and cash-strapped citizens to borrow MORE money and spend THEIR way out of THEIR fiscal crises.

Wouldn't that also be patriotic?

Despite the obvious contradiction -- obvious only to conservatives apparently! -- another question was ominously answered during these Senate proceedings: would moderate Republicans such as Collins, Snowe, and Specter vote with their Party this Congress, or with Democrats?

Isn't it fitting that we got our answer in their first key vote?

Frankly, if this is the way things are going to go the next two years, Obama has his filibuster-proof majority.

Maybe Collins, Snowe, and Specter should just change Parties now and make it official. It'll be much less painful watching them vote like liberals without the "R" after their names, don't you agree?

Our government got us in this mess, up to them to get us out of it. We may think we have money, but in reality we don't, we just have numbers, the government prints and owns the money. If this country goes into a deep depression or even bankrupt, that money we have will be worthless. This all started with Nixon no longer backing up our bucks with gold and each administration has made it worse since then. Both republican and democrats.

Patriotism (*in this case*) = working to do something for the same electorate that is apparently screaming to state government officials of the same party as those same Republicans in Federal government = to quick b!tching over cheap politics and do something different from the last two terms.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

patriotism = paying higher taxes

:rolleyes::wacko:

patriotism = paying higher taxes

patriotism = supporting the troops

:: supporting the troops == paying higher taxes ?

OH, NO! :help:

given the amount that goes percentage wise to the military, it's not supporting the troops by paying taxes.

maybe the whole country should work for minimum wage... we will all get our taxes back in May and our low purchasing power will cause deflation

Amazing how the 'Right' seems to want to have the corner on the Patriotic market now.

Hal, where have you been at? The Right has had the Patriot trademark for decades now.

(like it or not)

The reasons are simple:

The Right loves what America is... The left loves what they think America should be.

But take heart, one day when the whole Country agrees with your left-wing logic... then YOU will be the Patriot, and I will be the one trying to tear down the country.

It's all cyclical, but you must wait your turn.

The whole "liberal" and "conservative" thing interests me.

The basic premise behind being a "conservative" is that you wish to "conserve what exists now." Conversely, the "liberal" wants to alter today by "making progressive changes."

It seems to me that today's "liberal" will be tomorrow's "conservative." If the liberals fight for change -- and they get it -- why wouldn't they get upset at someone aiming to change their ideas? If (and when) that occurs, the liberals in this case will essentially become conservatives.

Hey that's pretty good logic!

In fact you don't have to wonder about it as if it's some, far off question of "someday".

We have it with us now!

Go to an major university and witness Political Liberals who have come to power "conserving" the status quo. The Boards and class rooms are run By them.

They say they LOVE diversity ... for a laugh ask how they voted in this election, for President Senator and local leaders.... take note of the their idea of diversity.

One might already suggest Liberals are really conservative in that; their ideas never evolve even in the face of failure.

Take Public education, though it is an utter failure in many regards, the Liberals will not let go of the Monopoly and do anything really innovative. (asking for more bonds is not really innovation)

So I guess it's fair to say Liberals are conservative towards maintaining the current Model.

Of course we could get into the boring discussion about what a "liberal" or "conservative" is by definition ... but as with real "education" .... thats not a useful thing anymore.
