In Texas the car is insured, not the driver. If you give him permission to drive your car, it is insured. Quite different in the UK from what I understand.

It's the same in Illinois, and it's a terrific way of doing it. I was able to drive for 2 years* on my F-1 without a single penny being added to the cost of 'er indoors policy.

And you're right, Nich: it's totally not that way here. It's he driver that's insured, not the car.

*The F-1 is a multiple entry, non-immigrant visa. I never spent more than a year continuously over there.

Damian - what you 'kinda think' and what the actual legal reality is might be two different things... of course it depends on what you're actually asked, but in my case the officer asked 'have you moved here or are you here on vacation?' to which there is really only one true answer

I don't know what you were asked, and it sounds VERY much like you're trying to justify yourself, but we all make our own decisions and you're free to do as you please, of course... I just wouldn't have been comfortable answering 'oh, I'm here on vacation' to the above question when that's obviously not the case

yes, N-N; I was here before the Oct 1 date, but only heard about the changes after that date, and had been operating on the 'foreign reciprocal license holders get one year' thing which was the only info I'd had on the subject... my citation occurred in November

thanks for the link; I already have that print-out (not that the officer or the people at the DPS cared; they just said 'websites are not always accurate' so we'll see if the judge agrees with them or not (they said the same thing about their own phone hotline, even though I'd called it less than 24 hours before - they also couldn't answer my question 'was the information I was given EVER accurate, so it's just out of date, or is it completely wrong?'))

and yes, I know what an international driving permit is; I have also held one in the past; however, again, that doesn't mean that people here know what they are... the sergeant at the DPS kept insisting that if you had an international driving permit you didn't even need to have your actual license with you, which I KNEW to be complete bollocks, but again, he didn't want to listen to that... when I asked for what he was telling me in writing, or even a link to a web page saying what he was telling me, he wouldn't give me anything; so I don't know how convinced even he was that he knew what he was talking about

I think however prepared you are, you can come unstuck if one or two people don't know their job... they have all the power, and you have to do what they say, even if a different person tells you a different thing every time you ask

and of course, you may have no problems at all; I know plenty of people who haven't... it's just well to be prepared; I would have liked to have known all this before having to go through it, but there you go; I didn't, and I'm still coping :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

I'm finding it pretty hard to find info on Alabama. I found on DMV.org that I can drive for up to one year on my UK license as long as I have an IDP but I can't find anything official to back this up. All I can find is the documents I need to apply for an AL license.

Each state is different in their rules and regulations regarding driving on a foreign license.

You need to check your local branch for details (or their online site).

Agreed, but all allow some time on the foreign license. Magenta - that is a great avatar - too funny!

yeah, sure; enough

I just find it interesting you can come in here and boast about how you got round the law, but in the end you can neither justify it or defend it

but as I said above, we both made our own choices, so I'll leave it there

I had a Michigan and Florida license for 2 years before I moved to Texas. I got alot of tickets there, so when I came to Texas, I told them I never had a license before. I didn't want them on my record. It took me 3 tries to pass the driving test. The first try I didn't even get out of the parking lot and he failed me.
