What are current K1 filers thinking, talking and planning for regarding dates of marriage after entry. For members who have "been there / done that" what would you do differently and why?

Sorry but I had to put a N/A question in each poll due to technical or intellectual limitations..

Ahmed arrived on April 25th 2008 and we married in the court house on April 28th 2008 but then had a small wedding ceremony with family and friends on June 28th 2008.

What would I do different? Nothing...LOL I wanted to marry right away but I also wanted wedding pictures to cherish forever. I got both.

I am having CRS (can't remember stuff) syndrome right now and cannot remember when we filed our AOS. I know it was approved quickly and he got his Green Card in September So I am thinking we file it in June. I will look and let you know if that is right.

Take care and Good Luck!!

LOL my memory was better than I thought it was June 3 when we filed AOS and he received his Green Card in September. :P

We got married on his 2nd day in the US. We would do it again. Our reasons were (1) to start AOS as soon as possible. Sure you can wait 90 days, but thats 3 more months without being able to work (being bored at home!) or travel. (2) we wanted to beat the 2007 fee increase and get our application in before the mad rush. We got married on Monday and I mailed the AOS package on Saturday.

Given lots of research on VJ as to when we could expect to have the visa in hand, I have set a date, and we'll get married on that day regardless of how many days he's been in the country. HOPEFULLY not only a week - too close for comfort!

If we get the visa very early, I don't think he'll come over much before 2 months ahead of the wedding, just so we don't have to rush to get the after marriage, before K1 runs out stuff taken care of.

I wanted to pick a date and plan an "event" because it's important to me to get married (legally and ceremonially) only once, and at the same time. It's not going to be a big huge thing, second degree family only, less than 50 people. I felt it was important to have all of our family and loved ones around us when we took this big step in our lives.

I'm sure that the private quicky court house wedding followed later by a reception/ceremony works for some people, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that, for reasons I can't really seem to put into words that accurately describe them.

Perhaps this plan is a bit naive, but we'll see how it goes.

I entered the US on July 31, 2004 and we got married August 28, 2004.

We had our wedding all planned right after our interview approval on June 10, 2004.

I would not even have bothered to move to the U.S. if I was not 100% positive that I wanted to marry my husband, so there was no need to "wait and see" after I moved here.

We had a beautiful wedding and had plenty of time to plan it before I even moved here, but I was only 3 hours away from my fiance and we visited every single weekend from the time we met until I moved here.

I had our AOS package all ready to go before we got married, so all I had to do was get the marriage certificate and add it to the package and we mailed it 2 days after we got married.

We are going to try to use as much as the 6 months allowed with the VISA in hand before entry for planning, and then get married within 2 weeks after arrival. My plan is to visit in the next few months to scout out some venues and approximate availability...(pending the POE) so that once we are approved we can ask the venues availability and start putting down deposits.

We plan on just getting married legally about a week or two after she arrives. We did a big ceremony in Thailand back in November, so now it is just a matter of getting a slip of paper.

Thus, we have a prenup to protect my financial assets.

Just a word of advice on a prenup, make sure you get it translated into Thai, with a certified translator so she can read, and understand what she is signing. I had a friend marry a girl from mexico, and she divorced him after getting her 10 year GC, and when they went through the divorce proceedings the judge threw the prenup out cause she said she did not understand what she was signing at the time, since English is her 2nd language. He got taken to the cleaners.

We're getting legally married as soon as I enter the country with my K1 (just the 2 of us), but our religious wedding takes place 5 months after that in my home country (with family and friends), once I have the travel documents...

Et alors je viendrai à vous, telle une goutte illimitée vers un océan sans bornes.

He got taken to the cleaners.

But of course! We had it done in Thailand, at Sunbelt Asia. They had the document prepared in English and Thai, with a certification that both versions contain identical text and provisions. My fiancee had a Thai attorney representing her and explaining the provisions to her, before we both signed all copies. There's a copy on file with Sunbelt, my fiancee has a copy, I have a copy, and there's a copy which we will give the county recording clerk when we apply for the marriage license in the US.

In addition to having it in her native language, it's considered a good idea to have the prenup executed well in advance of getting married so that there is no concern that she was pressured into it. In our case we signed the prenup in September, the wedding is looking like July or later at this point. That should be plenty of time for reflection.

My hope is that the prenup will just sit in a drawer gathering dust for a bunch of years, and then one day we'll take it out and have a burning ceremony where we'll toss it into the fireplace, and hug and kiss and make passionate love, and attest that knew all along that we had no use for the wretched thing.

Hi, I wanted to know. What is the time allowed for us to file AOS. My fiance, Dao. will be arriving in the US ON March 1st. What is the time allowed for the AOS filing, once we are married? We are also having a simple, small wedding, with a larger wedding later in the year. Thank you all for your posts. And good luck and happiness to all.
