Hi everyone,

I need help. Do I have to have a traditional engagement before my fiancee goes for his interview? We decided not to do that but instead save the money for us to get married when he gets here. But I'm worried that they may ask for proof of engagement at the embassy in Ghana when my fiancee goes for his interview. Please help me on this. I'm worried.

I did not go through Ghana, hopefully you can get some feed back from those who did. However, I did use a K1 and we did not have a traditional engagement, or a ring or anything. What we did have was strong evidence of a relationship. Not sure if that helps you or not.

Regards,

P

You need to be engaged in the sense that one of you asked the other to get marred. Thats it. If you had a party or a ring it might be nice to include photos. But it is not required. We didn't send anything in.

We did a traditional engagement in Nigeria and presented photos as evidence. Unfortunately, at the interview in Lagos, the consul officer put our case on AP because she felt that the engagement was too elaborate (judging from the photos) and she wanted to make sure it was infact not a wedding (which would require a different type of visa application). It took another 3 months for the AP to be completed. Eventually, we got a 2nd interview and then the K-1 visa.

My advise is that you save your elaborate ceremonies until after you get your visa. Alternatively, if you do go ahead with a traditional engagement before your interview, you may want to take out any pictures that would give the appearance of a wedding when you present photos at the embassy.

An engagement ceramony as a requirement is dependant on what is normal for the cultures involved. In some cultures there are big events around an engagement and in others there is an exchange of rings and in some it is just a meeting of the minds. Your case should fall somewhere between what is normal for you and your partners cultures.

Your submission must include a signed letter from each of you to the other, committing to marry when you are here together. That is the only "engagement" that the U.S. requires.

We didn't have a traditional engagement apart from the traditional "let's get married" discussions (and then a proper proposal later). In fact I didn't know what a traditional Ghanaian engagement would be, so I just asked my husband. He says, "Oh that's when you bring some Schnapps and some kind of weird fruit to the lady's parents. Some cash, too." So I guess the empty bottle of Schnapps would be something to bring to the interview! :P
