Actor Val Kilmer may be the next action star-turned-governor, the Associated Press reports. Though he hasn't made an official decision, Kilmer, a New Mexico resident for more than two decades, told the AP that he's looking for ways to be "contributive" in the southwestern state.

"If that ends up being where I can make a substantial contribution, then I'll run," the registered Democrat said, who would replace Gov. Bill Richardson if elected. Richardson is term limited and can't run for reelection.

In addition to the Caped Crusader, Kilmer also appeared in the 1986 movie Top Gun and the 1991 Oliver Stone film The Doors.

But what is Batman's political leanings? To the left, it seems. He has only recently started to make political contributions and most of his money has gone to liberal consumer advocate Ralph Nader. He gave $4,600 to Nader's 2008 presidential campaign and $2,300 to favorite son Bill Richardson's presidential campaign, according to campaign data on the Center for Responsive Politics website. “If I run, I’m going to be the next governor,” he was quoted by The Associated Press as saying.

Kilmer said he hasn’t decided whether to run. If he does, he said, he’ll benefit from being an actor because people will want to meet him. But, the news service’s Deborah Baker quoted Kilmer as saying he isn’t thinking about running because of his fame.

“I’m just looking for ways to be contributive,” the news service quoted him as saying, “and if that ends up being where I can make a substantial contribution, then I’ll run.”

Kilmer said he’s not a politician and isn’t “going to try to become one,” adding that he has “no interest in being governor of New Mexico for… fame and power.”

It’s not the first time the actor, who lives on a ranch near Pecos, has sounded confident about his chances if he jumps into the 2010 gubernatorial race. He was quoted by the Boston Globe last month as saying a lot of actors become politicians, “and they always win, so I guess we’ll see.”

Though Kilmer has talked openly to the national media for months about considering the gubernatorial race, this week is the first that he’s been politicking in New Mexico. In addition to his interview with the New Mexico Associated Press reporter, he appeared on the floor of the state House of Representatives with Speaker Ben Lujan earlier this week.

I never liked Val Kilmer - probably something to do with his playing that poor man's version of Han Solo in that 3rd rate Star Wars retread with the midgets.

All of those old Batman movies (except the first) were toilet IMO. Kilmer's was bad, but not really cause of him. Clooney was a bit better but Batman & Robin had the worst screenplay in history of cinema - short of Transformers.
