Restrictions on travel with Russian Passport?

Using a US Passport, you have to be back in the US 6 months before the US Passport expires. Is there any time limit for a Russian passport? If you travel out of the country on a Russian passport, can you come back the day it expires or the day before? The reason I ask, is my wife's Russian passport expires October 20, 2009. She is going to Russia in September and coming back around October 14, 2009. Will there be a problem? Thanks.

Where is this regulation?

Good question. I may learn something. I have heard from a number of people that you need to complete your travels on US Passport within 6 months of its explanation. I have found this so far. Maybe someone can help.

http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/faq/faq_1741.html#gen9

"If possible, you should renew your passport approximately nine (9) months before it expires. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met."

I can't find which countries require the passport be valid for at least 6 months. Help..

The gig is that if you attempt to enter a country that will allow you a 90 day authorized stay and you have 30 days remaining on your passport... they may not let you in... Your passport must be valid for the entire authorized stay period regardless of your intentions....

In addition if you are travelling to a country that requires you to have a visa... Your passport must have a sufficient validity period.

This is no different than the USA... When a visitor goes to get a tourist visa... the US requires a minimum of 6 mos. validity.

The link you provided mentions 6 mos. when you depart... not 6 mos. remaining when you return.

Yeah, it wouldn't make sense for the US to require you to renew your passport...at all really, let alone 6 months. Unless you're under indictment or some other restriction, the US can't stop you from leaving the country. And if you're a USC, they can hardly keep you from entering (unless, of course, there are really special circumstances), although on an expired passport you probably will have to sit in the white room for awhile until they decide you've been properly inconvenienced.

Other countries, however, can make as many restrictions as they want. Russia requires your US passport to be good for 6 months. It varies form country to country, but you should really think about getting your passport renewed when you're starting to come up on the 6 month date.

Why not just send it to the local Russian consulate and pay the Fee for the new updated one?
