The author served as a consular officer in Skopje, Macedonia, from 2002-2004; Port of Spain, Trinidad, from 2004-5; and Budapest, Hungary, from 2006-7.

There is actually a very significat amount of marriage fraud taking place - Much more than I would have expected.

His recommendations towards the end of the article are interesting.

One of the more comprehensive articles I've read. There are a few errors but nothing major. Some of the suggested remedies are pretty harsh.

I found this interesting.... he lists the website goodwife.com and this was there

The Good Wife's Guide

From Housekeeping Monthly, 13 May, 1955.

Note: This article may actually be a fake. It has also been listed as coming from a High School Home Economics class.

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have be thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.

Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.

During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.

Be happy to see him.

Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

Don't greet him with complaints and problems.

Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.

Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

A good wife always knows her place. :wow:

Very interesting article,

This recommendation I do not agree with:

Recommendations

Eliminate Fiancé (K-1) visas. There is simply too much fraud associated with this visa category. Americans who intend to marry foreign nationals are free to do so, but making the effort to get married abroad testifies to the legitimacy and seriousness of the relationship. Couples can always have a second ceremony or reception in the United States once the foreign spouse receives his or her immigrant visa.

Yes there is alot of fraud with the K-1 visas....also the reason I have to go through more of the red tape ####### because of others who have abused the system!! It makes me SOOOO MAD!!

Excuse me...but who the heck is he to tell me that because I don't want to get married abroad (in my home country) I am not testifying to the legitmacy and seriousness! I lived with my fiance for almost 2 years, been together for 4 years!!! I could have married and adjusted status from F-1 visa but we were not ready! Now I have double the hoops to go through, ( K-1 and AOS vs. just AOS) but I was not going to abuse the system!!!

Couples can always have a second ceremony? Again who the heck is he or USCIS supposed to tell us how a US citizen can get married legally to their spouse and celebrate the marriage!!

Ok vent done!!!

Good article but it does look like the author is overly jaded. For instance when he said that a significant percentage of those seeking these visas are fraud makes it sound like most are fraud but then he goes on to say that most are legitimate later on.

Also he had said about the incidences of visa rejections by the consular officers being sent back to the states was high. Those rejections can't be proven to be fraud many times. I am sure that many are just gut feelings that the officer had and decided to reject on some probably minor point. It does not mean that many of them were fraud. Many were probably legitimate and that official may have been wrong in rejecting it.

Throughout the article I could see he seemed jaded. Of course he may have been a consular officer for many years and over that time a few here and a few there does add up to seem way worse than things are.

Does fraud happen in the ways he described? Yes. Do some Americans get taken because they are naive? Yes. The fact stands though that our government is not our babysitter. They can look for obvious things like criminal records and stuff like that but as an American I am allowed to marry who I want. If I put in for a visa and they check that I am clean and not a dangerous felon and they check my future spouse and they are clean then give us the visa. If there is fraud involved then investigate and condemn. There is or was a concept in this country that w are innocent until proven guilty. The way things have been it seems is the opposite.

I lived and traveled all over Asia for 3 years. I can't recall meeting one person that wanted to move here, and I went to some pretty poor places. For that matter I can't recall anyone that even wanted to visit the U.S.

I'm only here for the good salary. I'd go back to Asia in a minute for same salary.

I agree Unless ...........................the USCIS plans on paying for one of the ceremonies, the time off I would have to take from work and ALL travel expenses. =) If they include that in the conditions I am totally game.
