The military are probably feeling cheerful. It's one of the few expanding employers in the world at the moment... WW2 did wonders for the US economy, effectively getting people out of the Great Depression.

Military recruiting goals are being surpassed. The poor economy is starting to make the military an option for more people. I'm surprised somebody hasn't posted an article on it yet claiming it's another sign of confidence in Obama.

The Federal government as a whole has increased hiring.

In a 2005 interview with AlterNet, Ames said the "slave mentality" is stronger in the U.S. than elsewhere, "in part because no other country on earth has so successfully crushed every internal rebellion."

Slaves in the Caribbean for example rebelled a lot more because their oppressors weren't as good at oppressing as Americans were. America has put down every rebellion, brutally, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the Confederate rebellion to the proletarian rebellions, Black Panthers, white militias ... you name it. This creates a powerful slave mentality, a sense that it's pointless to rebel.

Or if could be we have a large middle class that has a lot to lose when you start burning down the cities. There's also a sense of greater legitmacy of a democratically elected government and a Constitution that goes back to 1787. Washington may screw things up but not bad enough to replace it with mob rule.

It's also the case that European societies tend to be more homogenous than the mishmash of tribes we call the United States. Whereas Americans are divided by religion, region, ethnicity, urban-rural tensions and all the other trappings of the "culture wars," the primary split in most European countries is class.

That's an interesting observation. I've heard it said that many nations are formed on common language and ethnicity but the U.S. was founded on an idea.

It doesn't take much to get people to riot really - there just has to be an overwhelming sense of injustice and identification between those who feel that there is an injustice. You can fuel those fires quite easily if you can tap into that sentiment.

I don't know how to write what I am thinking about this. I am sure I would sound too simplistic to some or too hopeful. We have the choice of destroying our fellow man's property while trying to be heard, or can work with our fellow man to change each others' lives. I still have positive views about Americans and the way many come together during certain circumstances. I am also not in a really horrible situation yet so I guess I can't understand the idea of damaging property and possibly others, who are in no better situations than me, to make a point. You will have two sides of reactions I am sure, but part of me feels hopeful. How did people feel right after 9/11? I know how I felt...and I saw people being nicer to each other actually, even if it was temporary. Like I said, this probably sounds simplistic to "experts".

Yeah, I'd imagine having confidence in your CIC that he's not going to throw you into an unnecessary war might have something to do with that.

Maybe we're not rioting because we're adults and realize throwing a tantrum isn't going to help things. Or American Idol is on, one of those.
