We went through a rough patch at the beginning of our marriage but hubby grew up and are stronger from it.

I am married for life, for better or for worse. :)

I think USC/foreign marriages are stronger thanks (or not!) to USCIS. If you make it through long distance, interviews and adjusting to someone else culture, nothing can break you.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

We've been together for eight years and married for four, and I can't even imagine anything that would split us up at this point unless he suddenly turned around and started abusing me. People nowadays get married way too quickly and divorced way too easily, and they seem to have changed the marriage vows from 'for better or worse' to 'until things get a little uncomfortable'. :(

Moving to a new country and completely changing your life can be an extra stressor on a relationship, so I'm curious as to whether or not the divorce rates among USC-Foreigner couples are higher or similar to the US national average of approximately 50%.

I've heard this national average quote numerous times...

My question, does it include prior marriages/divorces by same person or only first-time divorces?

That would be the average for first-time divorces. I can't remember the exact figures, but I believe the average for a second marriage jumps to 60-something percent and 70-something for a third.

That's a nice thought, but I have serious doubts that it really matters if a marriage is doomed to failure. Plenty of marriages fail on VJ and we only know of those who stay or come back. I doubt all failures come back.

To the OP: Their failure is not your failure.

Poor Claudeth, we have been married for 3 1/2 years now

I must be an old timer here. Me and the Mrs will be married 5 years in March. The honeymoon has been over a long time ago. I thought she would dump me after she got the Green Card, but she keeps hanging around for some odd reason I cannot fathom. It must be my riches, good looks, and habitual horniness that keeps her from dumping me for a mail order boy toy (since she is now a US citizen). ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

i can honestly say being married before that my wife is a perfect match to me. we laugh together and yes get mad at each other but she is awesome about talking thru any disagreement we have. this is the best relationship i have ever been in totally healthy.

Amen! It all comes down to finding the perfect mate I think. In my previous life (w/ a Green Card Jamaican), it was eh, ok but lacked true communication...not even a good verbal fight once in a while for interest. But now that I've found my true soul-mate, we knew from that first 10 minutes almost 3 years ago that we had something really special. We are true partners and I know that we have helped each other grow tremendously and are wide open in our communications. Even from the thousands of miles away, we know when the other is not having a good day even when we try to put a  on our calls. I credit our good communication with building a very healthy relationship that has thrived and will last forever! Somedays its almost like we are in the same room.

I've always heard the divorce rate for USC/foreigners was lower than for USC/USC... around 20% vs. 50%. It'll be interesting to see what this poll shows.

As for myself and my fiancee, neither of us have been married before.

I dont think we will get a good reading from this poll, as most ppl who have divorced their forgien spouse dont hang on vj anymore

I think someone posted an article a while back and it did seem the divorce rate was lower for immigrant marriages.

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Though, brings up a very pointless question: From what countries would USC women order sex slaves for green cards from? :P

Timeline

I was married to another Japanese guy before this one. I met him in Japan and brought him home to America with me. We fought a lot, but he was my first boyfriend so I thought it was normal. He convinced me to marry him so that we could stay together and made it sound like if I didn't agree then I wasn't serious about our relationship. So I did.

Yeah... he turned out to be a COMPLETELY CRAZY sociopath. I honestly think that he was certifiably insane. He wasn't human, not as I think of it. He convinced me to move to California, which isn't my home state, far far away from anybody I know that could help me. The day we got here to America, he went absolutely crazy because somebody on the phone gave me the wrong instructions to our hotel and broke a pair of my sunglasses while they were still on my face. He forced me to work while he stayed at home and 'made music' (played videogames). He continued to be extremely physically and mentally abusive. After almost four years, I finally got payback when his parents came to visit and I had my mom come down too and told her everything and we got him arrested. Needless to say, we are now divorced.

I don't think that he married me for the green card. He even tried to get me back, even though he already passed the two year trial period. He was just a bad person.

Based on my experiences, I would think that divorce rates are universal. As I have learned, cultural differences really do cause a big problem sometimes, especially because people don't realize why they're angry with each other... they have a different 'norm' in their heads with which they use to judge situations. I also think that for some not having a chance to date for a long period of time or live together before getting married might cause compatibility problems. There are also those who are in it for the green card. That would about balance out all of the honest people with unbreakable relationships forged by the ridiculousness that is the visa application process.
