SEOUL (AFP) – A dogged South Korean grandmother has failed her driving test 771 times, police said Thursday, but a local newspaper reported she will keep trying.

The 68-year-old, identified only by her last name Cha, has taken the test almost every working day since 2005 in the southwestern city of Jeonju. She failed again Monday for the 771st time.

"It was a record-breaking number here," Choi Yong-Cheol, a police sergeant supervising the test in the city's Deokjingu district, told AFP.

"I wonder if she will try it again for a 772nd time."

The Korea Times said Cha will in fact be back for another attempt.

Choi said that Cha cannot pass the preliminary written section of the test, averaging scores of 30-50 whereas the pass mark is 60 out of 100.

Local media said that Cha sells food and household items door to door at apartment complexes, carrying the items in a handcart, but wants to get a car for her business.

Police estimate she has spent almost five million won (3,600 dollars) to take the written test, with each test costing 6,000 won in addition to other expenses.

"I feel sorry every time I see Cha fail. When she passes, I'll make a commemorative tablet myself and give it to her," one officer was quoted as saying.

Emmett Fitz-Hume: I'm sorry I'm late, I had to attend the reading of a will. I had to stay till the very end, and I found out I received nothing... broke my arm.

She's taken it "every day since 2005"? Either she's taking the piss, or the examiners are. I smell some kind of bullsh!t.

Go listen to some free beats:

This might be a crazy idea, but instead of taking the test everyday.... why doesn't she spend a month or two..... oh.... i dunno...... studying? It is like someone that does the same thing over and over, expecting different results.

From what I remember from the long time I was in Korea is just give her the license. She can't do any worse.

Indeed.....She will probably drive better than the masses in Seoul....

Ha, wife failed twice, that was way too much, always drove a manual transmission vehicle, but got hit while keeping her hand on the gear shift lever while making a turn. DMV wants hand over hand steering with both hands on the wheel, in our fast ratio power steering rack car, most corners in the city can be taken by turning the wheel 30*, 45* at the most. But the DMV still wants baby finger over baby finger steering, certainly can't use hand over hand.

Just went ahead and purchased a compact vehicle with an AT, the DMV couldn't care less in low gear, she was hitting 4,500 rpm going around a corner, just let the engine rev and waste fuel, don't shift, and if you drive too slow, will fail just as quick as driving too fast. Well, she passed with flying colors driving an AT vehicle, had no reason to shift or reason to keep one hand on the gear shift lever. She was very good at parallel parking, ha, not a place left in town to parallel park, so they have two junk cars on a side street for that. She is one of the very few drivers I feel safe taking a nap in the car with, but like the USCIS, also have to keep the DMV happy.

They are not even liable if they issue a drivers license to an idiot, brought that up in court when I was hit by an idiot. But they did retract his license.

How do you study for a driving test? You can practice drving though.

I failed my first driving test when I blew the parallel parking. Didn't mean much as I've never had a car accident driving for 28 years. I wonder what percentage of the population can make a similiar claim?

None

I learned to drive in Mexico City, pretty much either you learn how to react and drive with precision or you will be eaten alive on the road ;)

Seriously, she needs to give it up.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
