Here is how I see the average american views this scenario.

a few months ago I was listening to the radio and they were interviewing a typical middle class family who had just been laid off and as such lost their healthcare.

"We never thougth this would happen to us (losing health care)".

That is the typical american mindset, I don't need it, why are you asking me to pay for it. And then one day, BING! a light goes on because they can suddenly relate to the people who don't take health care for granted.
