Question about medical exam

Hi all,

My wife had an appointment today with her GP for her vaccinations in anticipation of the upcoming medical.

She's 23 and didn't have the Hepatitis B vaccination so they gave her the 1st of 3 jabs which need to be spread over 6 months and the last one can't be before 6 months, to our understanding.

Our concern, however, is that her medical will most likely be next month at which point she will not have completed all 3 jabs yet.

Will they make her have to wait until all the doses are complete before approving her medical?

Will the Visa unite deny or delay her visa if it's been started but hasn't been finished?

Note that we've applied for a spouse visa via DCF at the US Embassy in London.

Thanks in advance for your help.

No, for the most part you only need the first initial shots of the required vaccines.

Why are they giving her the Hep B vaccine if she is 23? It is only for those 18 and under. If she's 23, she will need the Tdap, the MMR and the HPV. If I'm just misunderstanding you and she is getting the HPV shots, which are in a course of three, anecdotal evidence has shown that if she has had at least the first one done before the interview she will have been deemed to have fulfilled the requirement. It would then be up to her to complete the course upon arrival in the US.

I went to the USA in 2006 with J1 visa and i needed that vaccination too. Of course i couldnt complete all the shots before i went and i had i think 1 before i went to the embassy, then had another one before i left to the usa and got the last one after like 6 months when i got back in the Netherlands. They never said anything because they saw i got the first shot i guess. The only place that really asked me about it was the college i studied for a half year.

Hope this helps.

#######, we misread the charts. We thought it meant that you had to have everything, at some point or another during your medical history, and would need updates or boosters for whatever she was missing.

Oh well, at least it only cost her £20 at her GP. Plus she got a letter confirming what she's had so far.

Out of curiosity, i'm assuming you don't need the varicella shot if you've had chicken pox before. Are you supposed to prove this to the doctor at the medical exam?

They will accept verbally if she has had chicken pox. They don't hold the varicella vaccination in the UK anyway.

So what are the two vaccines that an adult between the ages of 18 and 45 needs to get?

You can find out by checking this chart http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/...ccinechart.html

There maybe more than two depending on what already has been done.

Laura -- that is absolutely the best place to look for info (and good to see they updated the HPV info). Generally, a 23-year-old woman will need to have the following if she's coming from the UK:

  • Tdap
  • MMR
  • HPV (at least the first shot)
As has been mentioned above, it is sufficient to tell the doctor at the medical that she has had chicken pox in the past to fulfill the varicella requirement. Have her get a copy of her vaccination chart from her own GP to see if she has had the MMR or Tdap already; it is unlikely that she will have had the HPV.

My husband (who was 35 at the time of the medical) had been unable to track down his vaccination chart, so he got jabs for MMR and Tdap from his own GP for free. He was not required to have further jabs at the medical itself.
