Hello Quarismo!

From my personal experience, the first welcome letter will reach your mailbox within a month. Some people get get it sooner, some later, but it comes eventually. Then you will get your case number (I suppose you do not have it), and will be able to check your status on USCIS website and make an account requesting e-mail notifications. Once card production is ordered, that means you should get your GC really really fast (again allow 30 days, but it is usually a week or two). I would say the usual period from POE to GC in hands is two months. Again, some people get it within a month, some wait longer.

As an illustration, I entered POE on Nov 19th, got first welcome letter on Dec 15th, card production ordered on Jan 2nd, card in hands on Jan 8th.

Yes you can. I had to send my GC back because it had a mistake on it and I applied yesterday for a job through a staffing agency. I only needed my passport with visa that serves as a temporary GC (I-551) for one year and SSN.
