Pretty weird that people there still haven't gotten over that after all those years.

In Britain we had bitter infighting between Catholics and Protestants for centuries, yet there's no enduring schism in our society about it...

The South can't get over the fact that the North took away their slaves.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Well they had segregation until the 60's didn't they?

Clearly some entrenched attitudes at work. It might as well be a different country for the differences in attitude.

6, have you ever been in the South?

Agreed. There are total differences in attitude as with most other things in society that can be boiled down to binary (usually opposing) viewpoints. People with attitude problems abound just about for everything, including lingering [transformed] racial and social feelings.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I think it says a lot that while the civil war has been over for 150+ years, the attitudes towards it - and indeed the contributory issues that led to it (such as race) continued into the 1960s - and even through to today.

Absolutely. It doesn't take a PhD in cultural anthropology to notice although of course, people with ODD will live in denial just because. Although the underlying causes are there.

Talk fer yerself, yer Lordship! That war is still being fought in Belfast! And, too often, right there in London.

In London? Not these days...

The Northern Ireland dispute is over territorial control - It has nothing to do with the Reformation under Henry VIII and what arose out of that.

I've been to GA a couple of times. Why?

Sorry to have singled you out because I had the same question for the majority of posters bent on stereotyping the South. Furthermore, I thought you may be thinking about another North-South fight.

I'm a Yankee and have lived in few states in the North and South but haven't lived out West. I've cracked my share of jokes on the South but I don't see the Old South and its history as a dominate model for race relations now.

In London? Probably not for over 200 years now. As for NI, even that little bastion of sectarianism is on its way out, waaaay out. The peace process is alive and kicking notwithstanding a little bit of acrimony over the 'recognition of suffering payments' :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I think that's why PD was highlighting lingering sentiments and attitudes... not exactly dominant forces in the way people interrelate.

Although its not rocket science to note how a person's subconscious or community-influenced attitude can and does influence their behavior in irregular patterns.

The last IRA bombing I can recall was the one in the London Docklands - in 1995, I think.

The Good Friday Agreement was one of the Blair Government's notable successes.

There are still paramilitary elements in NI ("The Real IRA" for instance - who blew up that pub in Omagh) but those are pretty far outside of the mainstream these days. I never lived in NI so I don't know what the attitudes are amongst the public - but with political settlements being reached, I suspect those are on the way out also.

Shows that there is at least some hope for peace in the ME.
