All yeast is active, some is simply quicker than others... I find it at my local grocery store... it should be a very common item... sometimes it is called rapid rise yeast

 Every thing I need is at Vons :bonk:

I love Vons - miss their bearclaws!!!!

Ha, trying to reactive some unused brain cells, purchased on of those bread makers, seemed neat at the time, but after a month or two, get tired of it, so gave it away, can't even remember who I gave it too.

What I do recall, the temperature of the water you use with active yeast was critical, too cold, dough won't rise, too hot and will kill the yeast, so your finished loaf of bread is like a rock, but was a nice bone for the dogs to chew on. Never had problems finding the yeast, namely IGA or Roundy's stores around here, Jewels closer to the Illinois area, isn't A&P still there, think Krogers folded up, Piggy Wiggly, another major chain, blank memory on that, Wal-Mart is new, Pick-n-Save, Food Festival were some of the stores that sold yeast. In the packets as some have mentioned, remember also buying it in a small glass jar.

Not really an area of expertise on this subject, but do know, you can't make bread without yeast.

Found it more convenient to buy that frozen bread dough, toss it in the micro to thaw it, cut it into fifths, put it on a greased cookie pan, and bake it for 30 minutes or so at 350*F. Ha, was told by my wife and daughter never to do that again, tasted so good, they couldn't stop eating it, too many calories.

I think if I was stuck living in Hammond I'd be looking for the nearest place that sold cyanide capsules.

Well, it's not my preferred East Coast place but so far it's ok and we may be moving soon - military family.

I always thought it was weird too but I think they keep it there so it's with the fresh yeast so you can choose or something

Ok, I'll have to look for that now - refrigerated section with dairy. Weird.

My apologies. I've been there several times and it just seems a bit dreary. Any idea where they may be sending you?

Found some recipes online that I'd like to try and need either instant or active yeast. It seems like I am looking for a needle in a haystack! They have baking powder but in the 3 grocery stores I went to they did not have any type of yeast (one was a new Mexican grocery, Strack & Van Til, Pete's fresh produce and Walmart).

Not to mention they looked at my like I was asking for contraband substance

Where to find it?

Yea all yeste is active some faster then others, it uselly comes in a small pack. It is sold in most food stores/
