Where to find instant or active yeast for baking?

Found some recipes online that I'd like to try and need either instant or active yeast. It seems like I am looking for a needle in a haystack! They have baking powder but in the 3 grocery stores I went to they did not have any type of yeast (one was a new Mexican grocery, Strack & Van Til, Pete's fresh produce and Walmart).

Not to mention they looked at my like I was asking for contraband substance

Where to find it?

All yeast is active, some is simply quicker than others... I find it at my local grocery store... it should be a very common item... sometimes it is called rapid rise yeast

YMMV

Apparently they don't bake in IN with yeast  Not a single packet in any of the stores - no signs they even had it! Weird.

I lived in Fort Wayne, IN for many years... Scott's was where I shopped... Do they even sell flour at these stores?

Seriously? You can't find yeast in the grocery store? Usually it is on the same aisle with the flour and baking goods.

Yes, they have regular flour, then the kind with baking powder in, baking powder on its own, baking soda but not instant yeast or rapid rising yeast - nothing with yeast.

The yeast won't be in the flour. It is sold in small packages.

I know, we normally get it in small packages (in Europe). I searched up and down entire baking aisle and nothing. I'd go for even the frozen or fresh yeast but I think to find that would be seriously difficult.

We normally get in small packets (2oz or 50g) or in larger quantity in small jars in the USA too.

 Ok- it sounded like you were looking for flour with yeast in it. That's why I thought you were having a hard time finding it.

But the fact you can't find any at the grocery store is very odd.

Found it! Colleague from work suggested Sunrise Farm Store (Health Store) in Lansing, IL and they have it so I'll stop there after work.

Can't believe I should be looking in health stores for a simple ingredient of every bread.

You probably missed it because I've seen it at every grocery store I've been to. Like the others said it's always in the flour/baking soda/baking powder section of the store. I get mine from Wal-Mart and it's always there. :)

I have no idea where you are shopping, but every major grocery store has yeast. I buy mine at Meijer, but you can get in bulk at Costco. I know Merrillville has a Meijer. I have no idea why you'd have to drive out of your way for it.

i find that it usually isnt on the shelf itself, but instead on a little hanging basket type thing(technical term lol), on the baking aisle maybe thats why you have missed it ????
