So I'm getting married March 21 and I'm having a conflict here at work. We're slowing things down, I probably won't get a raise or bonus. I started fishing my resume around and I've got some offers that are $20k more than what I'm making now (I'm an auditor working for a professional services firm, these firms pay less but your career grows exponentially while if you work for a large company the pay is great but the career stagnates).

My problem is does it look suspicious to border agents (or UCIS) if I get a TN Visa a month or less before getting married? Is it worth the risk right now to change jobs? The reason I ask is because if I don't change jobs then I'll be stuck here till at least August so it's either change jobs now or wait it out.

The main reason this came up was not because of the money but I found out my company is sending me out of town for 5 months starting in march, so I wont even be around for the wedding or for the 4 months after I get married.

Where are you now? Inside or outside the USA?

Currently living and working in Virginia on a TN-1 Visa which is valid until October 11, 2009. I got this Visa with no intent to immigrate here (at the time).

Getting a new TN status won't raise anything as you are still planning to work as a temp status before getting married. You are already here, just get a new TN at the border for the new job and then when you get married a month or so later, you will have lots of time on the TN status to continue to work before the EAD comes in to replace it.

People do this all the time, in fact many plan their marriages around their TN status filing to avoid any complex issues.

I filed by mail a month or so before my marriage for my new TN status that was to expire in Nov. By doing this I got notification that I was approved for a new TN when my current one would expire. Once I got the EAD it made the TN obsolete, the current one and the next one. That was fine...
