(CNN) -- The Kyrgyz government is planning to close a strategically important U.S. military base that Washington uses as a route for troops and supplies heading into Afghanistan, Russian media reported Tuesday.

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said Tuesday at a news conference in Moscow that "all due procedures" were being initiated to close Manas Air Base, the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti reported.

The announcement was made after news reports of a multimillion-dollar aid package from Russia to Kyrgyzstan.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell on Tuesday called Manas "a hugely important air base."

...

The Russian newspaper Kommersant reported Tuesday that Russia would offer Kyrgyzstan a $300 million, 40-year loan at an annual interest rate of 0.75 percent, and write off $180 million of Kyrgyz debt.

A seven year old question that was debated over and over again, is bringing the war to the terrorists really working? Or is it making even more terrorists? Spain doesn't seem to be having any more problems and Japan is staying far far away, just trying to sell Sonys' and Toyotas'. And we still are not protecting our own borders with some silly notion the only way terrorists will come here is via the airlines.

Still feel, somebody here teed that handful of guys off, and it wasn't me, too busy working and paying taxes.

Millions of dollars were spent enclosing our airport with twelve feet high chain link fences with barbed wire up on top, still can get in with a pair of bolt cutters when the locks rust out while the ground avionics equipment is going to hell. Must be a fear that a terrorist will steal a hang glider and plow into the Sears tower. And can't drive five feet without running into a cop waiting to give me a traffic ticket. Hey, but I feel safe, I think. But would feel a lot safer if they don't take my guns away.

Is the CIA listening to the FBI yet, or is there a hangup in passing through Homeland Security? USCIS can't even contact the DOS to let them know your spouse is a USC, agencies never did like to talk to each other.

Our major defense against Iran was Iraq, so we go to Iraq and pound the ####### out of them. And it wasn't Reagan that bankrupted the Soviets, it was Afghanistan, so are we going to let Afghanistan bankrupt us too? Soviets tried to expand communism which never was communism, but a dictatorship instead. And now we are trying to spread democracy which isn't a democracy, but a tightly controlled republic, more of a dictatorship as well. I give up.

Well said, Nick.

We'll probably see a whole lot more of this in the near future as Russia will step up to test Obama's resolve.

WELCOME to hard ball international politics Mr Ovomit, now what are you going to do? Talk your way out of this one like you do everything else and stutter and say uh or duh about every other 10 words!

Open your eyes and clue in chap! This did not happen under GW Bush but under Ovomit and only after BHO got in office, they knew better than to take on GW!

Well its not like the relationship between Russia and US was sterling when Bush was in charge...

These things don't happen overnight.

Oh dear - another logical genius at work.

Tell what to Russia? How does that logically follow on from my post.

I'm asking how it is that you know that Russia "knew better than to take on GW"

It would seem that Russian has been taking on "GW" and the US for the last 8 years...

Who knew!?

Apparently not you...
