I think they're all overrated.

The Stand is one of the greatest pieces of contemporary literature written IMHO. He hasn't topped that one and probably never will.

I agree. But, I do love him. Read anything he will write. Some are much better then others.

That was my opinion until I read the Dark Tower Series last year. Read those, they are fantastic.

I am a avid reader, and King is one of my favorite writers. I also am a fan of Steinbeck, I love to read and King is a great read always. He has a way of weaving a story and making it interesting. I read the Twilight series, and it was ok, but it is for teens and young adults, and I am a little older than that. Any book that gets people reading is always a good thing. Most folks that don't like King really have never read him, or just seen the movies and base their judgment on that. Folks that read a lot usually love King.

I agree there. I don't go see the movies most of the time because movie makers cannot adequately depict what King writes. I am left disappointed. Only ones I thought were truly close was The Shawshank Redemption and The Shining. Otherwise, how does a movie maker let me know what a car is thinking? Or a dog? adequately depict the horrors one see's in their own nightmares? etc. King is great to me because of the story he weaves and what I see in my mind while reading that story.

Have any of you read Stephanie Meyers? She is a good story teller. I think she has limitations in her descriptive wording.....she overkills certain words. Overall, she is a decent writer, with inventive ideas, and I have enjoyed the series. I'm about 2/3 through book 4. The movie was okay.

Its really cool when authors do that. I've been to a few signings, but there's nothing like a personal touch.

I post on another forum for a favorite author of mine - the guy personally sent me one of his (very OOP and consequently very valuable) books from his own stash when I mentioned that I'd not been able to get hold of a copy.

That was really cool of him to do for your mom. :) I recently heard him on an NPR radio game show - he was really down to earth and unassuming.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Stephen King's opinion may drive a stake through the heart of "Twilight" author, Stephenie Meyer.

In an interview with USA Weekend, the bestselling author compared Meyer with J.K. Rowling , the author of the Harry Potter series.

According to Stephen, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."

While Stephen may not be a fan of Stephenie's writing, he understands the appeal of the series.

"People are attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie Meyer, it's very clear that she's writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It's exciting and it's thrilling and it's not particularly threatening because it's not overtly sexual."

He further explains, "A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that's a shorthand for all the feelings that they're not ready to deal with yet."

Agreed,

Stupid series looks more like a mexican soap opera/highschool musical/interview with the vampire melange than a piece of literature

There's a very subjective element to this of course, but for me... most, if not all of the stuff on the NYT fiction bestseller list is far from "literary".

I went through a brief period years ago of trying to read some of the James Pattersons, Dan Browns, David Baldacci, and (yes) Stephen King.

With very few exceptions I found them to atrocious - regurgitated plots, terrible dialog, bad plotting with twists you could see a mile off. That is really the problem with genre fiction - its largely driven by marketing, and things are published based on what sold well in the past.

"Literary" fiction - as in stuff that plays around with literary conventions and which deals more in thematic subtexts rather than straightforward storytelling is risky for publishers - and its really only the likes of authors like the late Kurt Vonnegut (who established a name for himself for that sort of thing - and got all kinds of critical acclaim for Slaughterhouse Five) who are able to work in that sort of style.

Most popular fiction is a grindhouse - churned out to meet tight deadlines (and hugely expensive marketing campaigns), and often heavily edited (in some cases rewritten) by editors who for all intents and purposes should be given a co-author credit for the amount of work they do.
