Okay, Poof! UN is gone. Now what do we do?
Most international significant multilateral and bilateral agreements have nothing to with the UN so without the UN there would be simply be another empty building in NYC
IMO, better than a building occupied by a constantly-delinquent (unpaid parking fines amounting to $$tens-of-millions at minimum) client. Easy solution to the empty building (as it is NYC) convert it to $40/hr parkade.

It seems pretty obvious to me that we can't rely on individual countries(us included) to maintain order objectively. so who do you call?
Ok, UN supporters point out the successful peacekeeping operations of the last due primarily to the UN influence. I'll give you a clue with 66 examples to choose from.

*sigh*

As I say... flavour of the week rhetoric.

Its "fashionable" to diss the UN, when you don't have much of a clue about how wide-ranging their remit and activities are.

Certainly there is corruption, self-interest and duplicity - but to suggest that the world would somehow be better off without the UN and the institutions it provides is being incredibly short-sighted.

Your post convinced me the UN is indispensible but I can't explain why. That's the usual line-of-reasoning we get on this issue.

How about we use construction analogy?

In SF, a 12-floor building which collapses in a 8.1 quake. The rubble of this building is used to reconstruct in same spot (without actually making it more quake-resistant) and 6 more floors are added.

12-floors was League Of Nations (precursor to UN, meant to prevent a repeat of WW1; the measure of its "success", well WW2 was far worse) where 18-floor is UN.

That's strange as I was inferring the opposite from your post.

Its not my job to convince you of anything. I wonder why you think it is...

Thanks for proving my point.
