I didn't even know where NJ was before I met Jared

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Oh I thought it was all farms because of the Jersey cows.

Yes I am fully aware Jersey cows are from England, but I figured this was a dairy state or something.

 See, all the things we are saying are true.

The best part is, there are certain places in the state where the smell changes and you really play guess that smell!

Like, the Pulaski Skyway from Route 1 & 9 by Newark all the way to Manhattan has the "guess that smell" game.

You and your friends basically say.."wow it smells like candy cane, ew now hot mustard...now potpourri...now burning garbage..."

Armpit of America my friends.

It makes me sad to read of how horrid NJ is for you who live there.

Perhaps we will all converge on Hawai'i one day and live out our senior years within the fragrant scent of hibiscus. Mmmm...

Now I would like to add a personal answer as to why USians need to learn more about (or aboot as the OP wrote hahaha) Canada:

because ignorance breeds fear which breeds hatred which breeds intolerance which breeds nationalism etc etc etc....

Then people want to conquer and claim. :o

This might be sound advice for anyone anywhere and not specific to these two countries....and I mean it both ways actually. :D

Geography, climate and culture.

Three things to study.

Get after it people!

Hahaha!

I love both countries for different reasons.

I wish I could blend them into one. Hee, hee.

Well, when I am the Empress of the World, I will.

It's human to stereotype a country or ethnicity, but of course, not always accurate. Yes indeed, different regions of the U.S., Canada, and any other country will vary amongst themselves. People in Texas are vastly different from people in New Jersey, for example. Just like I found out people in Ottawa are vastly different from people in Montreal. I have lived in Japan, Spain, and England and have lived all over the United States. So, I can tell you, most of the time stereotypes will not be true, but sometimes they will. The best way to approach a new situation/country etc, is with an open mind and no preconceived ideas. There is positive and negative in every country and every region. Those who blame everything bad on where they are, are just negative people in general anyway, and are probably like that back in their own country too. I find it more fun to focus on the positive things about where I am, wherever that may be. I think it is rude and insulting to complain to someone about their country. Definitely in poor taste.

I think some stereotypes are true to some extent, however I really do believe you need to be exposed to that culture in its own setting in order to understand where the stereotype is coming from and why. It changes your perspective and adds a degree of tolerance.

But not all.... i've met some real a$$holes in Toronto.

I'm not saying that Canadians aren't friendly and polite. My point is that saying ALL Canadians are friendly and polite is as inaccurate as saying all Americans are rude and ignorant.

Some of the experiences here remind me of driving in Houston. I've never had someone threaten to shoot me, but there's a lot of road rage otherwise. To be fair, Houston traffic is horrendous. I'm part of a Facebook group called "Houston traffic... when did I die and go to Hell?"

At least the Katy Freeway (I-10) is completed. That's so nice now. They started construction on it shortly after the dinosaurs died out and now, finally, it's finished! :D

So... American and Canadian stereotypes, huh? That reminds me of a joke: When an American bumps into a piece of furniture, he curses at it. When a Canadian bumps into furniture, he says, "Excuse me!" :P
