Never ever ever send originals of any document to the USCIS unless they specifically ask for it.... they will not return it

You may want to get a new certified copy as you may need it for other purposes in the future... it is always good to have

YMMV

I would definitely reccomend getting another birth certificate.

If it offers any consolation, during my interview the IO had the copies of everything I had sent in with the original AOS packet. So if you're lucky he/she may have your birth certificate on hand. But definitely still try to bring another one to the interview just to be on the safe side.

We had our interview yesterday in S.F. My husband is the beneficiary. The officer asked for his birth certificate even though we had already sent a copy. She just looked at the translation and at the end I asked if she wanted to keep it which she did. As for mine, I took a translated copy but she didn't ask for it.

Here is what they ask for... it's on a sheet of paper that was on the officer's desk and she asked us to pull out and put it in front of her.

The petitioner (me): DL, U.S. Citizenship (original and she kept a copy) or birth Certificate, current pay stub or current employer letter or taxes.

The Beneficiary: DL, EAD Card, Advance Parole (if you requested and received it), SS card, Passport, and birth certificate.

We were asked a lot of questions... she went through the I-485 form and asked my husband all the questions, specially the ones that are yes and no questions.

Go through the I-485 form study it and be prepared and just explain your situation. They understand. Be specific, specially with dates. Ours asked a lot about dates. When we married, when we moved together, we he entered US...

Also, at the end she asked for joint documents and asked what short-term goals we have… like I said be truthful and specific... they look to see if the case is real and legit.

Good luck.

I cant be added to his medical insurance as i dont have a ssn.

I suppose this is something that might vary from company to company but I've been on my wife's health insurance since the day after we were married. The policy is with Blue Cross Blue Shield, FWIW, and they certainly didn't complain that I don't have an SSN. I'd check that again if I were you.

also i dont drive therefore dont have a drivers licence

If you have no intention of driving, can't you get a non-driver ID card (from the DMV, its basically a drivers license without the driving bit - e.g. it's good for state-issued ID purposes).

nope ive looked into it and thru his work i cannot be on his medical insurance without a ssn.

and the dmv will not issue a state id or anything without me having permanent residency.

I too brought the full set of copies from my I-129 and I-130, and AOS submittals. I brought many photos of places we have been since my wife arrived here, A copy of out joint banl account, copies of her library card, social security card, college ID, rental agreement, and anything that I thought would show that she was adjusting to living in the USA by getting involved. Of all the documents I brought, all they took was (1) photo of us together! And even if I had brought a "copy" of my birth certificate, I pointed out that I had submitted one. He looked at my wife's file, which was pretty large at this point, and we compared his copy with mine to show that I was an American. All-in-all, the interview was a breeze. I'm sure all will be fine, and good luck
