Hi,

I just wanted to let anyone on the western side of Canada to know that Dr. Morgan is still doing medicals in Vancouver on Wednesdays and for the unbelievable cost of $350.00. If Wednesday's are absolutely out of the question maybe Thursday's.

Is that cost unbelievable as in way too much? Or good?! When I went and got my medical done there I thought it was awesome. Yeah, a bit expensive but well worth it I thought to have my results in hand that day and not waiting for them to come in the mail for 3 weeks! :)

Dr. Morgan and his staff are excellent! They made what could have been a very stressful situation not so bad!

Does Dr Morgan even exist? I went there twice and had a different doctor both times.

$350? Sheesh and I thought $275 was too much. The staff that works there are nice people. But I absolutely loathe the gotta be there at 6:30AM and be there until 2PM approach to doing things. I could never get there in time from Van. Island. So I had to stay the night in Vancouver. Seems like every other office in Canada has you go in and you're done within an hour. None of this hang around for 8 hours bored out of your tree routine like in BC.

I was hoping to take the first ferry from Nanaimo and come back on the same day!! Thought maybe I could have a 10:00 or 11:00 am appointment. Yeah, it is unfortunate that you need to be there so early in the morning but what happens is they have you come in at 6:30 am so they can get all of the visa medicals done before their regular patients come in for their appointments. I was done at about 8:45 am, 9ish. It didn't take all that long to get everything done with. Then we hung out and did some walking while we waited for the results around 1:45/2 pm.

You're right, they don't issue the visa the same day, it's always the next day. We were there a total of three days, we had the interview on Tuesday, Medical on Wednesday and then picked up the visa on Thursday. At least you live a little bit closer by, so it's not so bad.

Personally, I didn't want to trust my medical to Canada Post. I have heard of too much stuff getting lost in the mail and saw it happen to someone who didn't have it in time for their interview in Montreal. That's just my opinion though! I figured why not spend an extra $75 for my peace of mind!

Is that common? To have the interview first and the medical the next day? I guess if you know you're healthy, it's easy to see that on the results when you go back to pick up the visa. Probably the best thing then for me to do is try to plan the medical as close to the interview then, providing I get the results right away. I know a few people on the Mainland, so hopefully I'll be able to stay with someone then...cheaper that way.

I'll be there this Weds at 6:30 in the freaking morning. I'll be lucky if I stay awake during my examination.

For anyone booking an appointment, do email them instead of call. I left a message and my call wasn't returned for 2-3 days. They'll usually return an email within an hour or two.

It's not common to have the medical done AFTER the interview but in my case it was the only way to be done. I'm from Edmonton Alberta and the doctor who did medicals there cancelled my medical and went out of business two weeks before my interview. I couldn't afford to sit in Vancouver for a week so having my medical the day after my interview was the only solution. It worked out really well and I really enjoyed our 3 days in Vancouver. It was so beautiful! You absolutely get the results the same day though, it's not an if!

eyoa- It is super early but they get you going really early as well, blood test first thing! I really didn't wait too long and was out of there by about 9 am. Make sure you get there a bit earlier though, it is first come first serve. You want to be as close to the beginning of the line as possible. I agree with you about emailing though. They're fantastic through email!

You'll be able to take a bus from the airport to downtown and then the SkyTrain to Burnaby, depending where on Burnaby your cousin lives. The SkyTrain goes from Burnaby to downtown. You'll be able to walk to the consulate from the last stop or second last stop. :)

So I had my examination today and I cannot stress enough - get there early! I got there at 6 am and there were already 2 people waiting. We were lucky and were let in by another tenant of the building. Another group of 5-6 was let in when one of the office ladies showed up at 6:30. The trick to getting in quick is to fill out your paperwork as quickly as possible. I was third and by the time I was sitting back down there were about 25 people behind me.

The examination itself was pretty routine. I was done by about 8:45 am. You can either pick-up your results the same day at 2 or pick them up on another Wednesday between 6:30 and 2:00.

As far as booking your time at another time besides 6:30AM, the answer is no. Believe me, I tried. You can't get the ferry early enough to get there. Can't fly into Vancouver early enough either. You have to stay the night. Hope you got a friend that lives somewhere in the mainland.

You show up and sign in. Bring cash. They don't take credit or debit. At 7AM or so they do blood work (about 45 seconds as all they do is fill up a couple tubes). Then you wait until 8AM then go get a chest X-ray. They you wait until about 9-10AM and go for the exam. It's 5 minutes if even that much. Then you have to wait until around 2PM to pick up the results. At that point they give you a gigantic X-ray that is annoying to carry around for the rest of the day (for me I was taking the bus back to the ferry). I'd have rather had them mail it to me. Wouldn't have taken more than a day to go from Vancouver to Vancouver Island.

All the other medical offices in Canada seem to have you show up, do your all tests in a row and have you leave about 30 minutes after you arrive. Much MUCH better than the 8 hour bored out of your tree routine that Vancouver puts you through.

As far as the interview at the consulate, I asked them to mail me the visa rather than have me pick it up the next day. (I wanted to go home, not wait around 2 days in Vancouver) Bring them a LARGE Xpresspost envelope that is pre-paid with your home address already written on it. They'll send it to you if you want.

Another tip if you're coming from Vancouver Island for the consulate interview is to take the seaplane into downtown Vancouver. A bit more expensive than taking the ferry and bus. But the seaplane lands less than 10 minutes walk from the consulate. And it's a nice walk in the morning on the waterfront.

That seaplane of course is just as nice for when you're done as you can get out of Vancouver and be back home in no time at all.

I just checked the Xpresspost envelope size. It's a 314mm x 394mm size. Make sure it's pre-paid and your address is filled out before you give it to them. I know I just said that in the post above, but it's worth repeating.
