I want to humbly ask a question. I am the husband of my wife and I am living in a country as a permanent (lawful) resident that is not my country of origin. My wife is a American citizens but she comes from a conservative tribe. Now we are waiting for many months and have no news from the Immigration Bureau and I ask myself about why this is so. Is it maybe because I do not live in my country of origin? Or maybe because she is not “american”-american since she has origins from this tribe.? Does that change some thing? Also, I am worried more and more (and more) that maybe the immigration is worried about us – we married following our traditions and we exchanged money and goods (like gold) – this is how our people do it (and have for 1001 of years). Is it honest of us to have said it on the forms, how we did our exchange vows – with the contract and amount and goods we exchange? Are worried that the money is paid for immigration, but this is our traditions? Is it ok that we respect traditions or we should send letter that the money is not for immigration or buying “her”? Now, Im worryed – what is your opinion? we have waited many months now.

What is her priority date from her I-797?

Giving a Mahr or Dowry should not effect your process. If you are unfortunatly at the Vermont service center..you will be waiting for months and months and it is quite normal.

As M4E asked, when did the service center receive the file?

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

thank you I will ask her the exact date of reception on the letter, Im thinking earlly last spring but this was so long. I just want our culture traditioins to be accepted. I miss her. Thank you all.

I think if its part of your culture should not be a problem, as long as you are LEGALLY married, that is their main concern. Besides, how would USCIS know if a dowry or Mahr was involved? You should be fine. Best of luck on your journey. This process can be mind wracking.

Truly happy!!!

New life, new adventures, and a new attitude.

USCIS knows because according to the OP...

If a legal marriage certificate was included as well, USCIS is not likely to have a problem with this. The Consulate should also be aware of such tribal traditions in your country. Please complete your profile including country and visa category. What's the country of origin? Where do you live now? Somebodh familiar with the locations may have something to add.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

My husband is not living in his country of origin. He is a citizen of the Netherlands. He also paid me a dowry. I don't think it should be a problem. If you're coming from a Muslim country maybe they are delaying the approval of the petition due to extra security checks. When we first started, our lawyer told us that his country of birth might add extra waiting time on our petition (for security checks). We filed back in April. As you can see, we're still waiting. Don't let people tell you that a mahr or dowry is "buying" your wife. They don't know what they're talking about.

As a matter of fact. My friend who is a white, American woman married an Indian guy. He never gave her a mahr or bought her anything (he is also "Muslim" - or so he says). The CO actually used that against them during their interview. She was saying, "Why didn't you pay your wife a dowry when that is your custom? Is it because your family does not accept her? Or because she doesn't have any value to you like one of your own women????" She was actually really against him for that.

If you filed before April 1st, then you can have your wife call USCIS and tell them you are past the processing dates. Then they can look into it and do something. If it's after April 1st, then you just have to wait.

If it was early spring then I would think that your approval should be coming soon. Many of us received a Mahr, and it is written on the marriage license itself. This never created a problem for us either. Your consulate should be well aware of the culture. It doesn't hurt to be prepared to answer questions at the interview however. It probably won't come up, but it is still better to be prepared.

i was paid a dowry and it was written even in our marrage contract. we got approved with no problems. i also recieved some gold as a part of it. dont worry.

 In my case, my hubby is the USC, and in our wedding contract (cert) and translations it is written there the mahr, dowry, gold gifts.. My interview was yesterday, and it went well. There was no problem at all with the CO accepting the cert and content. The CO was also interested to know re his conversion process. :)
