The major drawbacks on the 5515 are the speakers (barely audible at times) and the single core processor.

Budget laptops and certian components e.g. speakers, processors, RAM, HDD size, onboard video..etc are not normally that great unless your willing to fork out extra cash. They have to cut corners somewhere and they will cut em all if they have too! I bought a laptop for my wife 2 years ago on sale down from $750 to $499 with free shipping.. dual core cpu, dvd rw, 15" screen, wifi, vista (upgraded to XP).. great.. but the speakers are junk but to be extected at that price point unfortuntally, otherwise still an excellent laptop today! We get what we pay for, personally I always aim to use headphones to do anything useful on our laptop e.g. movies, games, music or just buy a decent set of powered speakers and plug them in. Single core CPU could drag things down a bit but if you're just surfing the web it shouldn't hold things up too much. Although the more cores the more you can do at the same time! Your right dual core CPU's are the norm now! Funny I remember when MMX was the next big thing to take us all to the "next level"! lol

I got that compaq here at the minute and I'll run a few benchmarks on it after I remove the bloatware from it! So far not as much as a finger print or a dead pixel, clean, shiney and in new condition! looks really good actually I wouldn't mind one for me!

the laptop we are getting is a dual core , my brother says we don't need one with dual core

my brother says a lot of things though :P

he said this "You don't need a dual core cpu as it just uses too much battery for what you use it for. " well, we are using this laptop as my hubby's computer and junking his desktop computer :P

unless you plan on getting a used computer, dual core is pretty much the standard nowadays.

Netbook atom processors are single core - as are some of the lower-end AMD offers (including that laptop model I think).

Its total junk! Dont buy it.

Actually its not - its decent enough unless you want something for gaming or to watch HD quality movies.

If you're just using it for the internet and office stuff you don't need to spend more than $350 for a laptop.

If you want something just to run word and excell, you can get somthin alot cheaper. Get youeself a minibook.

Dude, you are spot on! What otherz dont understand here is that $350 laptops and netbooks are SECONDARY computers. I love using my Asus Eee Netbook to surf, email, chat. When I want to edit video, I break out the Macbook.

I cant wait for the ASUS SEASHELL to be released. Under 2.5Lbs,/$400. The atom processor gives you 7+ hours of batt life. Try getting that on a Dual Core chip you dont need when just surfing and chatting on the web.

10" Netbooks average around $350. Hard to type on anything smaller than that. The thing with that Acer is that you get a bigger keyboard and an optical drive.

The 1008 is out already - but I'd wait for the 1005, which has a removable battery (the 1008 model is moulded on).

I just got a 1000HE a few months ago. Well worth it.

I've used a machine with an Atom processor overclocked to near 2.0Ghz with 2GB RAM running Windows 7 and I have to admit it played DVD's fine, Youtube, HD Trailers, MP3's, web pages responded as expected.. all in all it wasn't too bad at all. True the current Atom in the "nettops" isn't dual core but they do support HT which will help in some areas. I wouldn't go as far as saying they are junk, after all these things are meant to replace big bulky heavy laptops for those that travel a lot or for those that just want to get online without forking out their first born. Don't forget these things run on very little power compared to their big brothers as well! Performance isn't the main selling point on these machines! The machine I'd used was $309 came with a 3 cell battery and XP Home and no bloatware! Battery life was around 2.5 hours I'd imagine around about 5 hours with a 6 cell battery. Thing weighed less than 3lbs, hard to beat if you had a long plane trip and not much in the way of in flight entertainment!

I'd buy one myself if I had the cash available at the minute.

I think in August the next gen netbooks come out with the Nvidia Ion chip (basically combined CPU and GPU). Those can (supposedly) run mid-level games at a decent framerate without sacrificing the small footprint.

Lenovo S12 is the first model I've heard about - supposedly out in August.

Good review. I dropped in the 2GB Ram upgrade to my Asus Eee 100HA for $25, and it really turbocharges the video streaming quality to near perfect. You can even get a 10 cell battery for even more insane batt life. Even got a $60 external DVD drive just for giggles.
