I bought my Acer Aspire desktop computer about a year and half ago from Walmart for like 5 to 600 bucks...

it came with the flat screen monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers...

and the dreaded Vista :P....

I haven't really had any problems with is so far...

we are looking to get my hubby a new computer in a few months.. is has issues.. :P

he wants to get a laptop but I am not sure if we should or not

I'll give this Acer Aspire 4520 pretty high marks. I've drug it all over the Country with me. It's been exposed to extreme heat and cold and the constant beating anything takes that is stored in a Semi. There's another driver on this tour that has the same model. His dog knocked his off his desk the other day and it's still working. It was a hard enough impact to knock the space bar off.

The WC has been the only thing to give me a problem internally. It's funny because the integrated cam was a concern when I bought it. I'll never look for one with that specific feature again. When it did work the image quality was outstanding.

O.K. there may be 4 problems with the 4520. As I mentioned before the WC went out. I have disabled it and am using an external cam now. The picture sucks on the 4520 when it's dark. I figured it was the cam. WRONG. I just hooked it up to the 5515 and it works great. Anybody (LuckyStrike) have any idea why it would work so good with the new one and not the old one?

The only reason I bought it was because I thought mine had died. Turns out it was just the power pack. Now I'm struggling with whether I should return it!

I'd return it. You mean the battery pack, right? Those things never last. Fry's Electronics seems to have a lot of deals for computer accessories.

*Calls the airport to see how much a round trip ticket to the U.S. is going for.* :jest:

It's an old post Steven. I just wanted to let anyone who reads this in the future that the Acer 5515 is not a good deal. I guess the old adage that you get what you pay for applies.

I hate to break the news to you, but the Acer is made by Asus, based in Taiwan, and Asus makes something called the Motherboard that is in whatever brand computer you are using now. Bust open your PC, and you will see the name Asus on your motherboard.

Personally, I like the Asus "Netbooks" , small underpowered laptops that are perfect for internet tasks, chatting, email, skype. You cant do video editing on them, but bump up the ram to 2 GB, and YouTube streams perfectly with a decent wifi signal. Traveling oversea with these 3 Lb cuties is so enjoyable. You get used to the 95% keyboard, and they are fun to use. For $320 bucks flat, you cant beat it as a secondary laptop. Runs rock solid on XP, or go with Linux and deny bill gates some extra cash. Cheers.

Dont wreck it till you check it, bro.

U R a Mac freak. How can you say anything positive about a PC? Your Mac Membership card is hereby revoked! :bonk:

U R wrong about the Acer Netbooks. They do well for the money. And ez to take in a carry on bag overseas. If lost or stolen, not a heartbreak either.

Do some more homework

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

That's not a bad deal at all on the Acer. I've personally never had any issues with Acer in the past, although I always recommend looking past the brand name and look towards the specifications!

I was poking around online for someone who wanted a basic laptop to do all the usual stuff and found this Compaq, it's recertified but if you don't mind a few finger prints or a nick/scratch then it's well worth checking out for only $380!

15.6" LCD

Dual Core Athlon 2.0 GHz

2GB RAM

250GB Hard Drive

Nvidia GeForce 8200m

DVD Burner..

NIC, WAN, 56k..etc

I've also been looking at a netbook for myself as stated they weigh nothing, keyboard size is close to the same depending on model and those with the 10" screen should be quite usable. I found (has a 8.9" screen) this Asus Eee PC for only $170+ $30 off if you use their eBillMe.. $150 for a netbook? The drawback is… it comes with a 4GB SSD with Linux on it, not a problem if you like Linux although if you have a spare license for windows lying around, XP should live on it happily! I didn't research other upgrade options but worst came to worst a fast USB drive could be attached for extra storage.
