My cousin just got resently married in December and wants to start filing for her husband. I told her to wait until she gets some things straighten out.

#1 she's in college has a 3 yrs old daught (her husband child).

#2 She was on welfare

#3 She is living under public housing

#4 She is getting state healthcare and food stamps.

I told her to wait because she has 1 more year left to rcv her bachelors degree. She wants to put in the paper work because she didn't even make $5K last year.

What are your thoughts?

It is a personal choice but nothing you indicate will have an effect on the initial petition... it may or may not have an issue come time for the visa dependant on circumstrances at that time

YMMV

If she can figure out how to provide for her family and her husband once he gets here and before he's able to find a steady job, then I don't see why not. She would only to find a co-sponsor to help her out during the visa process.

But if they can wait a year and it's a sure thing that she'll be able to get a job that can help her cover the expenses, then yes, the best thing would be for her to wait.

I thought getting assistance from the government/state would be against someone.

possibly later come time for the affidavit of support as it relates to some federal benefits and who is the benefactor, but not with the initial petition

YMMV

Not really, especially if she has a co-sponsor willing to help.
