i also miss to speak dutch. Sometimes I get lucky and get a Dutch tourist in the store and I can talk story for a bit, but yeah not much Dutchies on Maui

I should be on your neighbor rock in about 3-4 months I think, so I might drop by some time ^^

edit: btw, this reminds me.. last year when I was on Oahu, we went to PCC one day and attended a luau there and guess what.. there's like hundreds of people there and out of all people I am sitting next to a Dutch couple who had their honeymoon there haha, talk about a coincidence.

Thanks Jeroen! : ) It indeed does... and now comes the hard part -> disposing of most of my worldly possessions... Marktplaats and Speuders here I come ; ) Good luck on your journey!

Thanks and yeah, I know what you mean... I started to get rid of my belongings bit by bit, sorting things out that I don't want to have anymore and putting them on Ebay and Marktplaats, sending stuff from time to time to my new home and so on. It's mostly stuff I could live very well without, just in case ;)

But yeah, I took a few looks around my place last weekend and started to feel a bit sad when I saw some stuff which wont be able to bring along. It is indeed a very hard part of the journey :/

Hehe good... I'm glad it wont be the last time for me that I'll hear some Dutch around me when I move there xD

...speaking of which, how come we all speak in English in this thread? I've noticed they speak their own lingo in some of the other country threads..

hahaha Goeie vraag Jeroen!

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Hey Jeroen! Ik zie dat je je visa hebt. Gefeliciflapstaart!

Het is zo ontzettend rustig hier...

Oh well...

Hi everyone!

Sorry for writing in English, but I haven't learned Dutch (yet!).

My boyfriend and I are trying to decide which way to go for his American visa - K-1/K-3/IR-1/DCF. We want to do whatever will be the fastest way to get him here - with permission to work. It looks like it would be fastest for me to visit him there and file for DCF. I know about the ondertrauw already and that is not a problem. The Amsterdam consulate website says the American must have been a resident of the Netherlands for at least 6 months for us to be able to file there (but that's for the K-3, I believe). Does anyone have recent DCF experience? I've looked at the usadutch.com forums and wasn't sure what the status of the DCF there is (as of now).

The problem with the K-1 is that we don't want to wait 8+ months just to get that, then have him come here and have to wait another few months to get more than a temporary work permit. With the economy/immigration situation as it is in the US right now, no employers want to hire someone who doesn't have a green card. He's just finishing a master's degree in engineering in the Netherlands so I figure he won't have any problem finding a job here once he has a work permit.

Please help!

No matter how much information I read, I'm still confused! I won't even get into the issue of the paperwork for me to become a Dutch permanent resident! That is just as confusing!

The good thing is that my schedule is very flexible. I work on my own schedule so I can travel as I please.

Thanks so much!

No problem, we know some English ;)

It is not that hard and what they told you was right :)

- With K1, you would be living in the US and file in the US.. your boyfriend would remain in NL for the duration of the wait. You are fiancees, not married.

- K3 is the same as K1 but instead of you being fiancees, you are married.

- With DCF, you both live in the Netherlands and you will file in the Netherlands, and both are married. You need to live and be married with him for at least 6 months.

When I look at the timeframes, then the K1 route is definitely faster than the K3 route. DCF would be faster than the K1 and K3... BUT... you have the 6 months wait before you file for DCF, thus making it a slower process in the end... also, you will need a visa yourself to be able to stay in the Netherlands for that duration of time, the wait for that (I have no idea about time frames in that case) might also add extra time.

Thing is, if you can leave the US for at least 6 months in a row (with a visa for the Netherlands) and you want to be together as soon as possible, then I think that a DCF would be the way for you. If not, then I would go for a K1 as that would be the faster kind.. he would have to wait a couple of months (45-90 days after filing for the EAD) before he can work (unless he has his point of entry on JFK, they give out EAD stamps (work permit stamps) there (if asked for).. these stamps are valid for 90 days after he entered the US).

And funny what you wrote about becoming a Dutch permanent resident... we were looking at that option also (mostly since my wife didn't want to stay on this island lol) but, yah, it is probably even harder to do that than to become a permanent resident in the US.. I think going over Belgium or Germany (living there for 5 years, get a EU passport and then be able to live in NL without problem) would be even easier.. but yah, I didn't exactly want to live there lol.

Anyways, to give you an answer.. I think that when it is possible for you to leave the US for more than 6 months in a row, that you would be safe with DCF.. if not, go for the K1 :)

edit: btw, the route for K1 does not have to take 8 months, if I look at my own timeschedule, it could have been done in about 6 months (reason that it was a bit longer, was due to my own error, I didn't have all documents ready yet).

So here's my next question: does anyone have experience getting a residence permit for their American girlfriend/boyfriend to live with them in the Netherlands? Being in a relationship (even if you're not married) is one of the options on the IND website so it seems like it should be easy. I'm wondering how long it might take realistically. Thanks!!

Personally I have no experience in this.. you might try one of the following websites to see if anyone knows about the duration:

- http://www.buitenlandsepartner.nl/forum/fo...e100d626780f45d (this is a Dutch website for Dutch people with foreign fiancees and/or spouses but this links brings you to their English forums)

- http://www.allesamerika.nl/forum/index.php (not sure if they can help you here, it is a site mostly with Dutchies who go, or want to go, to the US but they all know English and they might be able to help you out also, I am unsure about this one tho)

Hope these help :)
