Hi there! A friend of mine from this website recently received his K-3 visa on his passport in the mail and it said the expiration date was in 6 months. We were under the impression a K-3 is good for 2 years. Can anyone explain the discrepancy?

Visa Journey:

Marriage: July 6, 2007

I-130 Sent: August 7, 2007

NOA1: September 24, 2007

I-129F Sent: September 25, 2007

NOA1: October 9, 2007

NOA2: March 7, 2008

Packet 3: March 28, 2008

Interview: June 24, 2008

AP: June 24, 2008

10 months in AP--will this ever end?

The visa stamp is good for 6 months ie: it has to be used before the 6 months expire, it's also a 1 time use. Once here in the states you have to adjust status also, if I remember what I read it cost around $1010 to file AOS to get a 10 year GC.

06-11-08 Mailed I-130 Package

06-18-08 NOA1

08-08-08 NOA2

10-22-08 Interview USEM

10-28-08 Visa Received

11-01-08 POE

That was fast!

Got to love the fact my wife was preggy and even with a RFE @ NVC she was still here in under 5 months!

Isn't the K-3 good for 2 years, multiple entry? It is the K-1 that is only good for one entry. Did they change this rule?

K-3 visa generally valid for 2-years, except in those instances in which the limitations of age (aging-out), security concerns or ineligibility waiver limitations indicate a shorter period of validity is necessary.

K-3 visa holders are authorize to remain in the United States for the period specified on their I-94.

They may request extension of their stay using form I-539. Their status may be terminating if they do not file adjustment of status or extension of stay with the Service.

They may travel outside of the United States and return using their nonimmigrant K-3 visa, even if they have filed for adjustment of status in the United States prior to departure.

please don't speak so certainly about the topics that you are not sure. K-3 is very different from K-1. like miamiwife said as far as we know K-3 is good for 2 years and it is multiple entry..if they didn't change the law..

The visa stamp is good for 6 months ie: it has to be used before the 6 months expire, it's also a 1 time use. Once here in the states you have to adjust status also, if I remember what I read it cost around $1010 to file AOS to get a 10 year GC.
