Anyone know where I can find sticky rice? Is this something one can find at a typical Asian food store? I'm also trying to figure out where to find a rice steamer and non-instant rice. Oh, and does anyone know if it is possible to get jackfruit in the U.S.? Has anyone seen it in this country. I haven't personally.

Thai jasmine rice and glutinous rice are both available at our local international foods supermarket. Also haven't seen any fresh jackfruit, but frozen ones at the store as well as canned. Not sure about the rice steamer; I've never seen any around.

Don't think you can get jackfruit (Kanoon) here. I haven't seen it. They don't have Durian here also, which is good. I can't stand the smell of that sh!t.

Great steamer researched online and bought it. Works flawlessly. Its at Target in white and black

Veggie / rice steamer

Just go to the grocery store and get the Jasmin rice. You will love the way it smells when cooking. Just a warning eating it right after cooking will spoil you. Everything else that not Jasmine or just cooked will never taste as good.

Great, Great book. It also has the Thai names for the dishes so you can talk about them with you SO as you make them. Also has pictures of the food prepared which is really cool. and yes your sticky rice is in there.

Here in Vegas I have seen both fresh jackfruit and durian. The Durian was 5.49/lb. The jackfruit just started showing up a couple weeks ago.

As for the steamer, we bought a nice Panasonic Rice cooker at Fry's and then she bought on of those basket thingies and makes sticky rice over the stove.

Virtually all asian stores will carry jasmine rice (Rin favors the "Three Ladies" brand). They also have sticky rice (usually labelled glutinous rice or sweet rice). We've seen jackfruit and durian in the asian markets in Memphis (the durian was frozen whole, thank God as the whole store would have reeked!). Both were very expensive, although they did sell half or quarter jackfruit.

We have an "Aroma" rice cooker from Costco. Rin doesn't like it. It has a warm feature to keep the rice warm all day, but it tends to still burn. She wants a new one. Anyone cook and keep rice all day (or even overnight) in the cooker without a problem? If so, what brand/model?

I bought it in Thailand for around 3,000 Baht back in 2003. It is the best! Rice always comes out perfectly, never burnt; nothing sticks, period. After purchasing it, I became a rice snob and wouldn't eat at restaurants whose rice was stale, overcooked, etc.

Obviously this Japanese import would be cost prohibitive for most, but if your significant other is willing to send or bring one from Thailand, they may still be in the 3,000 Baht range. It does not have a transformer to work internationally, so you would need one of those as well in USA.
