tell her, "next time I want to " kang lung""

And then she will "topsa lopsa lai" you!

I have no idea what you guys are saying in Thai but my girl said I was so bad to talk to her like that...

Ok. So I had no clue either, but I persisted in asking Thanti.

Best as I can tell --- kang lung is essentiall a request to ####### your partner up the #######. Yum Yum.

And "topsa lopsa lai" is pseudo-Thai. It's actually a Finnish pop-song with made-up words, but if you recompose the syllables it seems to have something to do with smacking your partner around when they're misbehaving, probably because you've just asked them to be buggered up the #######. Yum yum.

So... did we pass the quizz?

Ready for round #2?

Birch-Beer I want to thank you for your post.

I have very minor issues with Chada. That said one of the things is she just doesn't get things done or make things a priority. Its that love / hate thing I have with the Thai culture. I love my girl for how laid back and calm she is but hate how difficult it is to get things done or done right the first time. It makes me feel so much better to hear I might have that in common with everyone else (I get frequent PM's from others telling the same story) So anyway I wish you the very best of luck!

If we could all get our girls to be a little like Magic Girl (USCANDAUL's) girl we would be in heaven. She needs to go in the visa consulting business. Chada and I got to meet her on my list visit and that girl has GOT IT TOGETHER!

 Thanti is organized I'll grant you that. She's truly magical in many other ways... she cast her spell on me at our first meeting two and a half years ago at the lobby of the Woraburi hotel on Soi 4, and I've been hooked ever since.

:secret: (if you keep posting that stuff here, it's gonna go to her head and you'll ruin it for me, bub) :innocent:

Anyway, I don't know if it's a 'cultural' thing. Maybe it is to some extent. But I think there are plenty of type-A personality Thais who are super efficient and organized and run around with checklists and planning docs doing PM stuff, same as you and me. Just like there are laid back Americans who can't plan a peanut butter sandwich.

Don't be too hard on Chada regarding this stuff.... I think all of our gals in Thailand are doing an amazing thing, in simply agreeing to uproot themselves and start all over in the US. Dealing with all the ####### of the visa filing on their end, on their own is not easy.

Birchbeer: Sorry to hear about what happened. She's a real trooper, heart of gold! It'll be ok, just a few more days and you'll get your answer Monday.

:innocent: Help ! pull my legs I gonna fly .

I made the big mistake by cast my spell on the great complainer and great planner that why I need to be organized.

I am bored to get any complain from my guy please do not give any pressure to your girl. :bonk:

For naughtier stuff, I would prefer sending that privately. A book that serves as an excellent resource for that is called "Thai for Lovers." I had had a copy, but it got swiped by a deranged Thai lady.

Now that sounds like an interesting story!

Tell more!! Tell more!!

Everybody likes deranged Thai lady stories

:reading: I would like to be collator see the book first !

Hey All,

Regarding english classes, we sent AAm's daughter to the YMCA. This was in Chiang Mai, but I'm sure they have one in Bangkok as well.

AAm's daughter (her name is May - 14 years old) would speak to me in English and she could read/rite pretty well. However, like alot of people who speak in a 2nd language, she was just very shy about pronunciation. She takes English classes at her regular school everyday, and then after school she has been taking English classes at the YMCA. She's been doing this for two years....now...when I get emails/sms/fone calls from her...it is amazing....she's pretty fluent. The classes weren't too expensive...I think we've doled out about 7000 baht 2x/year for classes, nothing too big and it has worked out perfectly for her! I'm sure those English classes will make a BIG difference for her once she arrives here in the USA, which we hope will be around the end of summer or possibly sooner.

So...just a thought...follow the Village People to the YMCA!

Peace,

MK+JC+AK

She found many places but i need one to help her sound out words, etc. we tried computer class places and after 3 turns out the norm is sitting her down, opening an email then they go outside and talk with their buddies (expensive internet cafe, minimal instruction).

I'm leery of british english (she learned on that and was using quite a few weird english words and seemed confused when I didn't know). Like bobby-police, bollocks (BS), bonnet (trunk), cheeky, fortnight, I can't recall all of them but I guess it depends on if they teach dialect or common usage (with her accent, i'd have no idea what she was saying). Not a big deal but I guess it depends on where the instructor is from. She had an engish thai book but i went through telling her we don't use that, don't say it like that, etc leaving her frustrated. Canadian or American or maybe a rounded UK or AUS would work OK. The book she'd been using would set up sentences in strange ways and she wants to speak conversational English really badly.

...but if it helped your sweetheart, I'll look into it and give them a hollar since it sounds like a larger (not mom and pop shop) establishment.

Basically she has go in and they give her a test to place her in a class. They are all British teachers and going through their books, you do get the occasional strange British word, but for the most part is not bad. From what you are saying she is probably going to start in the beginning class and that would be beneficial learning the language. She may want to speak conversational English, however I think it would be much more of a benefit for her to read then to be able to speak as much. Wait til she goes to the store here, she will be lost if she can't read english.

You also should not be so down on her when it comes to saying stuff about learning english from the thai book. It might be that we don't speak that way, however we may actually write/read that way. Any bit of english whether it is UK/American/AUS is going to be a tremendous benefit to her when she gets here. If she thinks Isann people are treated bad, wait until she goes to the grocery store and someone is frustrated cause she can't read or understand something. She will hate the USA.

I think the test for BC was 600 baht, and then the classes were 7800 baht for 5 weeks, 3 hours a day.

I agree with you. I'm not down on her' she pulled it out and wanted me to go through which one's were brit only and which one's we use. Some pages had lots of brit stuff but for the most part it was OK. She was asking (I'm not one to criticize since any learning on her part I support 100%). I do know she needs to take some classes badly but she opted for the driving class. i told her she has to pass the written test at some point so I'm gonna see if I can get her to school...she needs that most of all since it seems she's losing her foundation. My last visit, her accent was heavier and I had the toughest time understanding her. I'm not sure if it's talking to family or friends, not enough with english speakers or what. If she'd learn english the computer and the net (which she's eager to learn) i tell her would be easier but she wants to learn it all....seems to be avoiding english school but at some point she'll have to go back and get more under her belt since everythign will be a mountain without that base.

Yeah I saw the placement is 600...couldn't find how much the class was. There's a school near her house (she can walk). I wonder if they focus on reading and writiing.

Here is my story ;

I hold B.A.degree my major is English but at that time my head was fulled of Grammar, dare not to speak even I had been studying English for 10 years.

Thai education's problem about English; I started studying English since I was 11 years old (quite slow) teachers focus just only Grammar ( reading fews pages by hole class student (30-40 persons) per lesson(~10 paragraphs)most of the exam is multiple choice examination I got write-up examination when I was at the university.

(I am talking about regural not international school) My speaking and listening skills was deaf-mute . :dead:

I got trouble from Arabic people,Korean,Japanese ...ect their English are very hard for me to understand so I took some Enlish courses at an Institute;they use a solfwear for teaching I learn Grammar(again with a computer)I am not interested much about grammar I mostly took 2-5 classes with native speakers a day,of couse at the first time I was not confident at all to talk and speak with those teachers but I saw people in the class their english weren't better than me and the teachers understand our problems. At the end what I got from the Institute is dare talk and fight with a native teacher who kept teaching only present sim.tense and present con.tense for 2 -3 months I asked him these 2 tenses are the most important? He got angry and kick me out of the class I told the owner about what happened my classmates helped to be the wittness then he was fired ! I think the Institute help me solve some problems I am not afraid to comunicate with foreigners but the most important to help me improve my English is MY GUY  We chat, talk, write lots emails and my guy is very talkative that why it can help me about my listening I have never had the problem with the Arabic customers anymore sometime my friends asked my help ( I hope my pronunciation sound not like them  )

Here is my opinion ;

British council and AUA Language Center each class (level) there are about 20 students I think one teacher she can not get enough good take care what about hire a private teacher then she can practice Grammar, skeaking, listening and writing skills. You can start with thai teacher then native speaker later or start with the native I heard about 300 ฿ per hour your girl can invite her friends or children to join 4-5 person 300฿ per hour there are many and easy to find.

That's pretty funny. I don't think you ever told me that story before.

Jut for context - the reason Thanti needs to communicate with many foreigners (Arabic, Korean, etc.) in English is due to her job.

Bumrungrad has many foreign patients who come for treatment in Thailand. Thanti works in the Communications Center at the hospital which involves a lot of phone conversations with these customers from different countries. Typically this involves 2 people speaking English, neither of which speaks English as a 1st language. More often than not the foreign customer speaks English much worse than the Thai staff at the hospital :(. But they're trained to be polite and courteous at all times, unless they're on Internet message boards giving their fiance a hard time
