Sitting in a hotel on soi 22. Can't sleep. Second interview tomorrow. Stressing out.

Cool. We (honey+me) spent the month of Sept at Liberty Apartments on Soi 22, near Queens Park.

http://www.cityphotoguide.com/node/404

Lots of good eats + stuff to do nearby. Great Mexican restaurant on Soi 18 as I recall, best guacamole in Thailand.

You're in Thailand eating Mexican food?!

Yeah, it's kind of funny, but it sure is nice to get some Mexican food sometimes. (Especially if you're from Texas). There's a place on Soi 22, kind of across from Larry's Dive, in a little mall area (can't remember the name) that has a Tuesday night Mexican Buffet. I like it for a change of pace sometimes. I don't remember ever seeing any Mexican Food on Soi 18. Anyway ...

My wife and I will be in Thailand in June. June through Mid-July

I'll be wanting some Mexican Food.

Daboyz - What's your status????

Best,

Dvd

I found a great little Mexican taco stand inside Topps Market on Thong Lor. The chicken tacos are great, I found myself getting them a few times a week for lunch. The rest of the mexican food I had in Bangkok, was expensive, and not good. I have a friend that lives on Soi 22, and always saw the Mexican place when I was walking to his place, but never ate there.

Too bad I cant say good bye yet to USCIS since i'll be applying for the citizenship in May... but at least I get to use this new card for my upcoming trip to Thailand (wish all the protest stop by then!!) and I hope my GC arrive soon!

Good luck y'all

We shouldn't be too far behind you, and since our case has now been transferred to CSC, I'm hoping it will be only a couple of weeks.

Hey don't get me wrong, I'm from Texas too, and being a Texas Aggie, definitely love Mexican and Tex Mex food. However, its just not the same if you eat it anywhere else! I'm so used to eating Thai food, which I've been doing for 8 years, that when I go to Thailand, I eat "Authentic" Thai food! Just like you can't get authentic Thai food in a Thai restaurant in Florida, you can't get authentic Mexican food in Thailand.

She got the visa. It only took 3 trips to the embassy. I really think the fact that I was there pushed them over the edge. I want to thank everyone that helped me through this:

Pushbrk

Rebeccajo ( even though I know she hates me)

Mommy

Raymond Bodemer

Richard Diran

Birch Beer (Frank)

I paid a lawyer $1800 for no good reason. When I got the 221g, he was no help at all. This was her third trip to the Embassy this week, my first. I really could not have done this without the help of everyone here.

For that I thank you all.

Congratulations Daboyz!!! :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Chok Dee on the US part of your journey! :D

I've been to one mexican restaurant in Bangkok - it wasn't too bad (can't remember where it is - around soi 11 or 13). I had taken Rin their a few years ago since she never had had mexican food. She said she liked it, but after dinner I went into a nearby 7-11 to get a bottle of water and came out to find her buying grilled squid-on-a-stick from one of the street vendors. Guess she really didn't enjoy the mexican food that much!

One of my favorite restaurants is Rioja. It's a spanish restaurant, and is one of the best spanish restaurants I have been to outside of Spain. Here's the link:

http://www.riojath.com/

It has nice ambience and a good wine list. With wine it can get a bit pricey (Rin and I spend around 3,000 THB their with wine), but makes for a nice evening out. They serve a mixed grilled seafood that Rin loves!

This may be a misunderstanding of Thai. They love eating more than most Americans I know. It's not the amount of food, rather the types of diets, climate, etc. that make us Americans larger and Thai so diafinous. I have seen three slim Thai coed university students put down, no exaggeration, a dozen dishes plus accompanying rice. They probably went out for som tum or ma-muang priow later.

Rin just wanted some delicious squid.

Agree, she can eat six to eight times a day and doesn't ever reach 45 kilos. But in this instance she really didn't like the mexican food (and hasn't eaten it again in almost two years of being in the USA), but didn't want to hurt my feelings. Another Thai trait (not wanting to say something tastes or smells bad).

My eldest daughter (21 yo) on several occasions has entered the house and said she didn't like the smell of whatever was cooking (whether it was Rin making Thai food or myself making western food). The first few times, Rin was very offended and thought my daughter was being really mean about it. I told her it is somewhat common (at least among family) to express your opinion openly. Whenever my daughter says it to me, I just tell her "good, more for the rest of us". I can remember growing up and my mom cooking Polish food (lots of boiled cabbage) that I thought smelled just awful; and would say so. Didn't hurt or feelings or stop her from cooking what she wanted!

In general, I agree with you. I've traveled quite a bit around the world (Europe, South America, Asia, MidEast, Australia etc.) By and large I'm a believer that when in Rome, do as the Romans..... I make a point of sampling local beers and wines and dishes wherever I am. I've had grilled kangaroo in Australia (eaten only by the tourists, the natives won't touch it of course), shwarma in Israel, bangers& mash in London, picanha in Brazil, and good ol' barbecue in Fort Worth TX.

But, sometimes you want a change of pace. A month in Thailand (that's the longest I've spent there) needs some variety over standard Thai fare. The particular Mexican joint I'm referring to on Soi 18 is (or at least, last Sept WAS) run by a Mexican guy who hand-made his own margaritas, baked his own tortillas and made from-scratch guac. I'd say it compared very positively with the best I've had in the US. And, as others here have written - it's a chance to expose our Thai gals to a cuisine they've probably never had before. Sure, they've all had ####### western food - Pizza Hut and McDonalds. But typically not something actually interesting and different. My SO was delighted to try it, and I believe honestly enjoyed it.

By the way, she stayed with me for two weeks in Israel in 2007 while I was living there, and she also enjoyed MidEastern food - hummus, fallafel, tabbouleh.

I like a varied international cuisine and I'm glad that she does as well.

Here's a link to a discussion about this particular place I (it's called Tacos and Salsa).

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Tacos-and-Sa...nt-t237462.html

I come down on the side of considering it 'authentic' Mexican, as opposed to Tex-Mex. You'd never confuse the menu for Lone Star Cafe, frinstance.

Since this is the Sawasdee thread after all, I suppose I should give a plug for a THAI restaurant here in the US, huh?

Well, I've been to about half a dozen in the Chicago area since I moved here in Oct.

But the best I've had so far here in the midwest was actually in Milwaukee WI - it's an Isaan style joint called EE-Sane

Here's a link to some reviews - http://thaicuisine.com/r/174.html

The only negative review is this one:

Awful, Awful, Awful food. Chicken panang was inedible, so spicy my insides Hurt-I asked for mild to medium-just a little kick.

That's really funny ... you go to an Isaan style restaurant and hate the food because it's too spicy for you???? HELLOOOOOOO??????

Anyway, if you're ever in Milwaukee, now you know where to go.

This is too funny I just got in Bangkok last night and was thinking about Mexican food this morning. Tex-mex actually as I have lived in Dallas all my life. I'm going to give the soi 18 place a shot!

On a serious not we are traveling to meet the parents tomorrow and going to get the Bai Rub Rong Sod (never married form) filled out. My S.O. things we need to write the form in Thai and have them sign it and then have it translated. Its hard for me to believe this as I thought someone would have mentioned it before. Can I get some info on this really quick. We have just 20 hours till we are getting on the plane....

Thanks in advance!

It is funny, Nam tried a couple of Mexican places with me when we were in BKK, but didn't like the food very much, then I gave her a chicken taco from the place in Topps and she loved it. Since we have been here she has fallen in love with Chicken tacos at Chipotle, and also likes guac.

One of my favorite restaurants is Rioja. It's a spanish restaurant, and is one of the best spanish restaurants I have been to outside of Spain.

Wish I would have known about that before we left BKK, love to try different food.

I like to eat a variety of food, no matter where I am, there are some great restaurants in BKK. My biggest complaint would be about the wine selection, for the most part not really good at reasonable prices.

You will have to get it the translated. It is in Thai, and it has to be translated for the embassy, they don't do the translation at the district office. Make sure the district office is going to be open on Monday. The two times I tried to go on a Monday, it ended up being closed for a Buddha day.
