The other hurdle you may run into while driving on a foreign license is that your insurance company may not cover in the case of an accident. There are clauses in your policy that may state only US Licensed drivers are covered. In this case your insurance would simply refuse to cover your car, and injuries, but worse yet any liability for the person they hit.

In the case of an accident, the other party may sue you claiming negligence on your part since you knew they did not have a valid US License. In this case they can sue you and your insurance company may decide not to cover based on negligence on your part.

This is the case with my insurance (Hartford). They only cover U.S. licensed drivers & don't recognize an intl license. Guess it's time to study for the DL exam!

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

Thank you both Aaron and Ray for providing that information. I hope others will read and head.

As with Aaron, my rates went down when I added Ooi to my insurance policy with Progressive, but would have gone up with Allstate, due to the fact that she only had a drivers permit/license for less than 3 years. Once again, we were dealing with a FL state license. She was able to pass her drivers test the first time she tried, after I paid $49 for an online course which guaranteed passing the written test if she were able to pass all their online tests.

She is currently taking driving lessons with the Florida Safety Counsel, and for 3 two hour lessons the cost was $256. For additional 2 hour lessons the cost is $98. They will let her take the driving test with their car for an additional 2 hour lesson of $98 prior to the test and a 1 hour cost for the driving test of $50.

As I have posted before, it is better to let someone else teach your wife to drive, as I will NOT do it! Not worth all the heartburn and frustration, not to mention... worse!

How is Danny & Chada? Ain't seen them in a while...

Hey HYENA...take your wife to here: Wat Thai DC

This is right next to you in Silver Springs. You're wife will most likely love it! Its right off of 495 and Georgia.

Plus...right down Georgia Avenue (On Georgia and Thayer) from the Wat about 5 miles is a great Thai market where all the local Thais hang out.

If you're Thai and in Balt/DC...you need to be taking her there. She'll get all her comfort foods, comfort language, and can even get Thai Movies there at a VERY cheap price.

Peace,

MK+JC+AK

I freaked my Fiancee out this week :D She has a Thai license and she can drive trucks and cars in Thailand, but she was very concerned when I told her our car is automatic :D She has never drove an automatic and thought it sounded difficult. She is used to driving manual transmission Isuzu and Nissan pick up trucks. :D

Hell I am not getting her a manual transmission car here, traffic is bad enough and I have not drove a manual in over 10 years and dont feel like going back unless I get an Audi with tiptronic or something :D we can be even. But I am not interested in the Audi unless they bring the A4 TDI Quattro version over.

But my plan is to hand down my current car which is 9 years old to her and let her get used to driving and I wont have to worry much about resale value.

I helped my friends wife get her Licence hear in CA last year. for me it was easy to help/ teach her but when her husband tryed all they did was fight. CA has the writen test in Thai but the translation is off so it may still take a few times to pass they also have it on tape were they read the ? to you so if someone dont read english they can still take the test. Also they told her she could drive on her Thai licence for 1 yr or till she could get a CA licence they have Geico insurance and that was not a problem. I am thinking ahead as I am doing the K1 thing now and my Fiencee is in Thailand she is going to driving school over there it is only 3300Bhat for 20 hrs a lot cheaper than hear and when she comes next year if she need I will just send her to a refresher course or maybe my friend will pay me back and teach her. anyway I hope that helps someone and good luck to all!!!
