When I travel on business overseas, I almost always get a fully refundable ticket due to the length of my trips, number of segments, and the frequency with which I make changes during my trip. My unused segments are turned back in to my travel agent for refunds. You would need to check with your travel agent or the airline, but I don't believe there is any charge for turning in an unused, fully refundable ticket.

Only the fees associated with ticket purchase are non-refundable (maybe agent fees?)

Okie dokie. Just booked a one-way fully-refundable ticket from BKK to ORD on NWA for sometime during the last full week of June. $2600!!!!! Ouch! Good thing I won't have to actually pay for it. I must have asked the lady 6 times if there was any fee for cancelling the ticket and getting a refund. I should get all of it back except for the $20 booking fee, which I can live with.

2600 dollars!!! I just bought a one way ticket for 739$ I also got a free 60 day tourist visa. I've always flown to Thailand on a one way and never been asked about it by the airline, but there have been a few times when immigration asked about my return ticket. I simply told them either that it was cheaper to buy it in Thailand or that I was flying to Singapore in 30 days. Those excuses always seemed to work.

It's quite possible that they won't even ask about my return trip in Chicago or in Bangkok, but I agree with a few other posters that it's better to be safe than sorry on this one. A tourist visa costs $35 from the embassy nearest where I live, so eating a $20 fee to get the $2600 tickets (which I will promptly get refunded once I get to Bangkok) is actually the cheapest and safest option.

It's over tomorrow, but the Thai Consulate has been giving 60 day tourist visa's for free for a while now. It's their way of stimulating the economy.

2600 dollars!!!

They really get you for fully-refundable tickets. Actually, that's exactly double the price of a non-refundable ticket on their site, so if you buy the fully-refundable tickets and cancel them, they don't lose out at all, and if you actually use them, they double their profits. :P

Ok my logic doesn't make any sense at all in that post. I'm going to stop posting now.

Hello Alan. Welcome to the madness. Hua Hin is a pretty nice place to visit, by the way. I'm sure you know that by now though. Best of luck!

Hua Hin is my favorite beach town in Thailand. The Eastern side of Koh Pha-ngan is my favorite beach; there's a legendary resort there, very akin to the book "The Beach" which also took place in that area and coincidently has a Scottish lass running the place. The name is 'Mai Pen Rai.' Perfect, huh?

Welcome Alan. If you have any questions about Thailand or the visa process, read the guide or search for key words on the site or our sub-forum. We've about answered 'em all and would be happy to make up whatever we don't know.

 (to the part in bold above)

Welcome aboard Alan. We're a fairly gentle lot for the most part.

I thought "The Beach" was set much further south, in the islands off Phuket? At least I was told the film was made there.....

Welcome Alan and we really mean it. You have some homework to do but pretty much everything past NOA1 is in this thread. Spend a few hours on it, the FAQ and guides and we will be more than happy to hook you up on any question you might have. We are a pretty tame bunch who for the most part are at the final interview stage. Stay tuned and you will see some pretty cool information posted in the next 4 weeks.

Interview = T-90 minutes and counting

Chada's at the embassy waiting. Danny's spent the evening at the Bar with Daboys and Nok...

By the way Scott you need to tell the SO that she's evil for trying to get me to do Tequila shots at 10pm on a school night. As for me I'm thinking what else can I do at this point other than have a drink and enjoy the ride... ;)
