There's no excuse not to be able to find Bulgaria on a map, but then most Americans can't find Afghanistan on a map either. As far as being clueless about Bulgarian culture...well, how much do your Bulgarian family know about US culture? Or Mexican culture?

Take it as a challenge and politely educate them. :)

One of my family members asked me where France was. I was shocked. I have to say that I could brush up on my knowledge of E. Europe...I just looked at a map of eastern Europe...uh oh. Off to study right now.

Did she have zero idea of where even to look? I mean, I've been to PI, but have to admit that I can't spin a globe and point right to it. I'd have to look around the Pacific a bit. :)

Unfortunately, Americans, especially in recent years, are very introspective and have absolutely no idea that there is a whole wide world around them.

I've had someone once ask if China has the same seasons as the US. I guess they thought it might be in the southern hemisphere? I've been asked several times what the climate is in China, as if it's a small country that only experiences one climate. It's bigger than the continental US.

I've been to Japan too, and it amazes me that so many people don't know the difference between Japan and China.

Good point, although I think it's become particularly bad over the last couple decades. When I was in high school in the late 80's, it was generally held that Americans were bad at geography. But we could at least identify the more well known countries. There are kids in my children's high school that can't even identify Mexico, Australia, or the UK on a map. And not just a few, but lots. I'm pretty sure most kids in the 80's could at least identify those countries. It's forgivable not to immediately know where Georgia (the country) is, although unforgivable not to know to look in Eastern Europe. Completely unforgivable not to even have a guess as to where PI might be.

I think it can be directly tied to American's lack of interest in the rest of the world. Such a shame. If it were up to me, every American would be required to live and work for 6 months in another non-English speaking country early in their life.

My standard answer for "where is your wife from?" is "I don't know, I think she's from like China or Korea or something like that."

Heh! I love it!

1941-45. It's been downhill ever since.

I nominate this kid to represent the US at the UN:
