APPLYING FOR ITIN ---Form W7

I have a question about the requirements for filing a W7 Individual Tax Identification Number. Says that photocopies need to be notarized by either A) A US notary public, and B) a foreign notary public (with some conditions that need to be fulfilled).

According to the W7 instructions, there is a US notary public available in the embassies worldwide. I am looking to have photocopies of my passport photocopied. Can I do this at the US Embassy in Manila?

Hoping for any input on this. Hubby is looking to file his returns at the soonest possible time and it takes about 4-6 weeks to get the ITIN.

Thanks!

If you need a US notary, most banks have one on staff, some banks in supermarkets also have a notary public on hand.. Call your bank and ask if they have one on duty, if you have an account there usually there is no charge for the service. I'm not sure about embassies, it's harder to do anything at them from my experience! Good luck!

We attempted to do this back in September after our wedding since I knew I would need this. I can tell you that the US Embasssy will NOT do the notary. Instead they will send you to DFA. If you check out the instructions on the W7 documents like a passport must be certified by the originating authority. In this case DFA for the your passport.

At DFA you will want to bring a copy of your passport and 100peso. Then it takes them something like 1 week to create a document that "authenticates" your copy.

Best of luck.

We did a W-7 while my wife was still in the Philippines and didn't have anything notarized. She got her ITIN without any problems.

That was a couple years ago and maybe the requirements have changed.

Called the USEM and made an inquiry. Docs to be used in the US need to be authenticated by the US notary. Told me to get a certification from DFA so I called DFA. Told me to get the photocopy of the passport an affidavit attesting tthat the details of the photocopy are the same as the original and have it notarized. In addition to the notary, I must get a certification from the Regional Trial Court that the notary public is indeed a certificed notary (that he/she is listed among notaries authorized by the Court). After getting those, I can then bring that to DFA along with my passport for certification then off to USEM for authentication. Geeeez....

And DFA certification takes 4 working days, too! Much as I would like to use the notary next door, I can't. Better safe and not waste anymore time. It takes about 4-6 weeks to generate an ITIN. Oh...DFA only does certifications from 7am to 11am. USEM does notaries from 7:30am to 10:30am. Can't really do both in the same day.

just as a note, the W-7 is no longer filed independently, it must be attached to your tax return. Also, you have longer to file if you are living overseas.

for real?

Randy i just got my wife's ITIN a couple months ago. Since she is a filipina i can give you what the IRS had me submit.

first a certified copy of her birth certificate called the RED RIBBON/GOLD SEAL certified. the same for the marriage contract.(red ribbon/ gold seal) Also a certified copy of her passport bio page. She needs to have this done at the CFO office she received the passport from to save you time because Manila is the only place that can make the "RED Ribbon copies" but Manila will tell you it will be several weeks for them to get a certified copy from the place they were originally issued so to save this hassle take the certified copies with you when you do the Manila step. It will save you a lot of time getting the documents. She then takes the certified copies to CFO Manila to get the Red Ribbon/ Gold Seal copies made. Get all 3 documents with the red ribbon gold seal to save a headache later down the road.Once you have those 3 documents you send those with the completed and signed W-7 form to the IRS in Houston or Austin i don't remember the address but it is on the W-7 form. Once the IRS has it it normally takes around a month or so for her to receive the ITIN letter. It will have her ITIN number on it. Sorry DFA not CFO.

Thanks!

hello grace i already have my ITIN and what i did was I apply from DFA manila my passport, marriage contract, birth cert., with red ribbon gold seal., bcoz thats the only kind of authentication IRS will accept and they required.

Hope it helps u grace

God Bless u

According to the IRS ITIN instructions, a certified passport photocopy is the only stand-alone document they will allow, meaning hat it is enough to have a photocopy of the passport, duly notarized certified by the DFA and authenticated by a US notary.

"If you submit an original valid passport (or a notarized or

certified copy of a valid passport), you do not need to submit

any other documents. Otherwise, you must submit at least two of

the documents listed below. The documents must be current, verify

your identity (that is, contain your name), and support your claim of

foreign status. At least one document must contain your photograph,

but a photograph is not required if documents are submitted for a

dependent under age 14 (under age 18 if a student)."

I am going to be off to DFA Wednesday and was told that it will take 4 working days to get the finished document.
