So anyway, is the default option is to make the thread move without leaving a "ghost" behind?

No, the default is to leave a ghost.

Occasionally, I have opted not to leave a trail if there is a good reason. For example, if the OP requests a thread moved immediately after posting it, I see no reason to leave a ghost in that case.

Agreed.

I guess I just suggested that because I noticed a lot of people were posting K3 stuff in the K1 forum. Maybe if they linked up "already married" and "~moved to K3 forum" they might get the picture... buuuut then again! Maybe not!

I think your idea is a good one (teaching men to fish rather than giving them to them :P ), and it was brought up way back when the forums were upgraded. If I remember correctly, there didn't seem to be a good way to implement it without adding clutter to the thread list.
