I have the same problem in Vietnam. The all you can eat buffet starts the minute I hit the ground. Deep Woods Off is the best, but I couldn't find it there and you can't take it with you.

Do they check? India doesn't technically let you take it with you either but they don't check. We take it with us all the time. Deep Woods works like a charm!

Of course, a mosquito net at night is vital. You don't want to breate deet all night.

I'm assuming (always a mistake with me) that Homeland wouldn't let it on the plane.

They've never stopped me. I put it in my checked in luggage, not carryon. You can't take it on your carryon.

Ben's 100 is the best, 95% deet. It's not for use on children or sensitve skin, but it works like nothing else. OFF, Cutter etc is like using using water compared to this. I don't think I'd use it everyday for days on end, but the stuff sure works. Here is one link, google for more.

Nets work better at night.....

I've also found that the edges need to be firmly sealed, mosquitoes will find the smallest opening and attack you. Once on the inside, you're fvcked cuz now they have you in an enclosed area

Agreed. We learned that if you pre-tuck the net between the mattress and box-spring 340 degrees, leaving a "door" to get in the bed, you can "close" the remaining 20 degrees after inside.

It works.

When I'm in serious mosquito country, I start the day wearing one type of repellant. Then, in the afternoon, I switch to another brand of repellant. That way, the skeeters don't get used to any one repellant (if there is such a thing).

I usually carry three types of repellant. The strongest one is called "Jungle Juice" from Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI). I believe it is close to 100% DEET. It works well. I also carry a mild citronella spray for when the mosquitos are not too bad.

Wearing a mosquito net over a hat (with a brim) works the best to keep the mosquitos away from your face and neck. That way, you keep the DEET away from your eyes and nose.

I agree with the poster about wearing long pants and a long-sleeve shirt (and you should spray repellant on them). A mosquito net at night is a great idea too.

They say to avoid wearing any scents from cologne, perfume, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc., as they attract mosquitos.

Avon Skin So Soft will only work for a few minutes until it has absorbed into the skin. the only reason it works for even that long it not because it is a repellent, but because it it an Oil, and the skeeters stinger can't get thru it until it's absorbed into the skin. You have to keep re-applying the stuff every 1- to 20 minutes to keep them off for the whole night.

I've also tried Avon's so called Bug Repellent, and got eaten alive. I woke up covered in bites, then switched to Watkins repellent, with DEET, and slept the rest of the night without any further bites.

The only thing that truely repells them is DEET. And it is the only product recommended by several country's health organizations to repel mosquitoes and keep you from being bitten by possibly West Nile infected bugs. Health Canada, CDC, WHO, the lot of 'em.

I was lucky when I visited Manila during January. The "lamok" were nowhere to be found, and I did not get bit once. I did come prepared, however, and left all that stuff with my future wife. I shopped Walmart in the sporting goods section, and found the Deep Wood's Lotion, I think it was called. It had the highest concentration of DEET. I also bought a few cans of some stuff that contains pyrethrin and you spray your clothes with it, and it holds for several washings. The wife was not happy with the smell of the DEET lotion, but when the rainy season came, she did not mind the smell! She sprayed some clothes with the pyrethrin spray, and that worked as well.

Another GOOD way to keep the sceets away when sleeping is to have a fan blowing on you. I've been using one for years. All all beds have overhead fans. Keeps the buzzers away.

Yeah it's a bit difficult to travel carrying a fan with you. We own houses in the Philippines where we stay and they all have fans.

It's cheap and easy to make too! It worked well in the US. Too bad the hippies complained so much, that third world countries won't use the stuff, even after all the alleged problems with wild bird eggs later turned out to be bunk.

I visited a couple other places with mosquitos, 4-1/2 months in Kwajalein, and a week in Ponape. The mosquito coils did not work well, but I found if you let a few geckos in your hooch at night, they would keep the mosquito population down. Plus, they were very entertaining with their acrobatics.

Here, in Sonoma and Marin Counties, the mosquito abatement folks sneak around at night, while the hippies are sleeping, spraying pyrethrin powder, and in the daylight, they put mosquito larvae eating fish in all the standing water and creeks.
