(and here's what backs up what I just said)

Mate Preference Comparisons between College Students in China and in the United States

The main purpose of this study is to examine whether college students in China and in the United States have similar or different mate preferences and whether a third person may influence their decisions in marrying a particular person. A total of 74 college students from both China and the United States participated the survey. Thematic analyses revealed two major clusters (communication-focused and individual-focused) of desirable and undesirable characteristics in a potential mate. Findings are consistent with the previous research that the Chinese students prefer more family-related characteristics (e.g., to show filial piety to their parents) in a mate, whereas the American students prefer more individual-focused qualities (e.g., to be physically attractive and athletic) in a person they want to marry. At the communication level, more American students pointed out the importance of fun and humor in a mate, whereas more Chinese emphasized the importance of kindness in a mate. In addition, American students listed more individual-focused characteristics than Chinese students. Similar findings were also obtained regarding the undesirable qualities in a mate. Next, Chinese students were found to be more likely to seek advice from their parents than the American students regarding the decision in marrying a particular person. Lastly, there was no difference in the ranking of the importance of the parents' approval in their decision of marriage. Limitations and future directions were discussed.

your study is irrelevant to the case. it is a consideration of how chinese students in china select mates, and how american students in america select. it makes no reference to how asian girls immigrating to america select mates. it also completely misses the mark in regard to chinese girl's motivation.

most chinese girls are only children. they select a man who has family in the same hometown so that they will still be available to care for their parents in advanced age. a girl is expected to move close to her husband's family after marriage. just the way it is. their parents will have limited benefit in retirement years, so will pressure the girl to choose a boy with parents close to them. they also select mates with highest economic potential, and with greatest physical height. it's that simple. this impression gained from personal knowledge of and discussions with more chinese girls than the 74 students interviewed in china and america mentioned in your study.

learn a little bit about china before making useless comments about chinese. google just ain't gonna cut it. live there as long as i have, and you will understand chinese people in the limited way that i do. marry one, and ou will understand even more.

(more from that study)

The following two concepts are examples of Chinese values underlying the Chinese collectivism. Xiao (Filial Piety) Mate Preference 7 According to Gao (1996), Xiao (filial piety) is a Chinese notion that describes the proper relationship between children and parents. To show xiao to one’s parent, one is expected to obey one’s parents and provide them needed financial support. Xiao is justified by the concept of bao.Sun (1991, cited in Gao, 1996) states that: In Chinese culture, a person is motivated to serve and make sacrifices by means of a sense of indebtedness. The principle is that a person is already in debt before he or she is born; he or she owes a debt to the parents who conceive them, and who will raise them in the future. Indeed, paying back the benevolence of the parents becomes the prototype of all the reciprocal transactions in society (p. 35). Ma (1997) argues that Xiao is a Chinese social norm that “prescribes people to uphold a strong kinship bondage throughout their entire life span” (p. 97-98). When people are young, they are attached to their parents and grandparents. When they get old, they are attached with their children and grandchildren. Wong and Stewart (1990, cited in Gao, 1996) found that in Hong Kong, 85% of the respondents want a law to force people to take care of their parents. The general consensus does not allow a person to abandon their aged parents. When the norm of the filial piety is in conflict with personal interest, one is most likely to give up his/her interest to live up to the norm.
