It depends. Legally, he can wait to get one until he gets his permanent residency approved. But you may need it if you want to open a bank account, add him to your work's health insurance plan, file taxes and get his driver's license once he receives his work permit. If he decides to get it now, his I-94 needs to be valid for at least 15 days and it will say that it's only valid for work if he has his work permit. Once he gets his permanent residency, he will need to go back to change the status on his SS so he can get a card that doesn't have any restrictions on it.

Diana

We applied for Carol's SSN when she first arrived. After we were married, we went back to change to her married name. Since her visa had expired, they said that we would have to wait until we recived her EAD approval.

You can find your A# in either the NOA2 (approval of form I-129F) your husband received from the USCIS and sometimes the Immigration officer at POE writes it on your passport. It starts with an A#XXXXXXX. As Ken mentioned earlier, some people don't get an A# (others do) and if you can't find it anywhere, you can write/type NONE in your forms.

Your visa number is the one with the red numbers.

Diana

Good Morning Important question so the A number is the one on the NOA2 and it is 9 numbers long? thats the one we found. and what is our alien number???

I believe that it's the same number. Also called Alien Registration Number. At least it was when I was an LPR.

Hi Diana,

Thanks so much for your response. We want to send out the package as soon as we are finished so we prob won't get him a SS until later i already added him into my bank account since i work at a bank they didnt need a SS for him. since it takes two weeks to recieve it in the mail we will send the forms without the SS number, hopefully that won't be a problem. thanks Diana!

my other questions are, do my taxes have to be the orginal or can they be copies? i made copies of all of them but when we went to Bogota they stayed with the orginals. If in the forms we need to write none can we write NA or leave it blank? for the G325 form i read somewhere it has to be 4 pages i downloaded the one that only has 2 pages, which one is the correct one? where they ask questions about me do i put my new last name or keep my old one?

Everything you send to the USCIS (even the documents you brought to the embassy with you) need to be photocopies because the chances of you seeing them again are pretty slim unless you file another form to get them.

Back in the day the G-325A used to have 4 different pages, at the bottom left hand corner they said to which group they would send them to, so that's why when you filled out the first form, all others were filled out automatically. You would click print and 4 filled out forms would come out.

That completely changed a while back. All you need to do now is fill out that 1 form, print it and send it with your package. I know that some people in the Spanish thread said that they made 3 additional copies in order to send 4 total, but that's not needed anymore.

Diana

I'm still hopeful for a December interview but I called the embassy today and they said that they have not received the physical petition yet. It was sent by NVC on 11/2. Does it really take that long for them to receive it? Tomorrow is a holiday but I'll be back on the phone with DOS on Friday.
