With so many of our members traveling to the ME/NA recently, I've been feeling a little nostolgic for my time in Egypt. And, when I feel nostolgic, I like to look at pictures (thanks to my husband who insisted on taking pictures every 3 seconds when we were in Egypt together). So, I thought, why not create a thread that is filled with beautiful pictures of the Middle East and North Africa? These can be your own personal photos or ones you come across online.

Happy posting

Cairo, القاهرة‎ , al-Qāhirah, the victorious, Umm el Dunya, Mother of the World.

Travellers tell that there is nothing on the face of the earth fairer than Cairo.

He who has not seen Cairo has not seen the world.

It dust is gold; its Nile is a wonder;

its women are like the black-eyed virgins of paradise,

its houses are palaces;

its air is temperate;

its odour surpassing that of aloe-wood, and cheering the heart;

and how could Cairo be otherwise, when she is the Mother of the World?

The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night, Tale of the Jewish physician

While the dust seems like, well, dust to me, and the houses were quite dilapidated, and the air was smotheringly hot, I do agree that if you haven't seen Cairo, you ain't seen nothing yet. Officially a city of 15 million, millions more expand the city out from all sides, coming in from the country side and blending into the fabric that makes this city unique.

Where the modern:

Midan Tahrir, aka Liberation Square, a bustling mash of roads in the middle of the city

Meets the medival:

Al Azhar, oldest university in the world

And the ancient:

And quite often overlaps:

Although the city can quite often be overwhelming

It's a place I hope to return to often

Gosh....I have way too many from both times I was in Egypt, but here are a few.

(I was sneaking in pics while I was in the museum! :whistle: )

LOL Aymerlu, that comment about sneaking in pics made me laugh. Brings back memories when I went to Eygpt in '94 walking around Cairo Museum and having to cover up my flash, wasn't too good at that and got told to put camera away, anyhow got a great pic of tut's head although flash went off, so I darted off and left some other tourist to take the rap when I see the security man coming lol.

edited to add... my quote thingy didn't work lol

Great pics everyone

Yacine's aunt had emergency surgery ... the doctor dropped the instrument on the floor and then picked it up and continued to operate.. needless to say she suffered a terrible peritonieum infection...
