Mommies with older children: are you potty training yet? Ben is kind of aware when he has to go but he doesn't always tell us, so he is wearing diapers. If he is in the mood, he will ask to go potty but when I try to put him on it, he refuses to sit on it... Any advice? I tried training pants but we had huge amounts of laundry and it just doesn't work yet. I am contemplating to wait until summer when he can just run around the house without pants but I'd like to potty train him rather sooner than later because he can be so stubborn.

I did pull-ups for a while with the boys, but as long as they knew they had something on them, they wouldn't go to the potty. I wound up having to put real underpants on them and deal with the accidents for a week or so. I decided to do this when they had a week and a half off from their daycare/preschool. They started using the potty and doing pee when they were approx 2 - 2 1/2. (I warn you, if you don't own a swiffer, get one. There will be pee all over your bathroom floor if you have a boy  ) Poop took a little longer, they were completely trained by like 3. They only used the pullups at night, but they hardly ever had an accident at night.

It is also helpful to buy dark colored underpants. The white ones and the ones with cartoons on them stain really easily and it's hard to get the stains out sometimes, so you just wind up throwing them out. All their underwear is dark blue, black, grey, etc. It's so worth it. I wish someone would have told me this beforehand :bonk:

Stef, my sister would have her son go to the bathroom with her husband. It was like he wanted to use the bathroom but was petrified of it. Soooooo, to get him over his fear, her husband would take him to bathrooms allover the place. Mall - potty, country club - potty, P.F. Chang's - potty. You get my drift. That way, he saw that daddy used the potty and it was ok for him to go too.

Hello.

I got very important point and I want to discuss about this. Leaving a baby in child care is considered child abuse, and working parents are very careless for their children. It is not going good. This is very interesting posting. I just want to say that every mother who are working they should little think about that.

Thanks for posting.

Sometimes, parents who work don't have a choice. Every circumstances are different and folks should be considerate of that.

We started the potty at 12 months. He knows it, he plays with it, sits on it when he wants to and sometimes uses it. He doesn't communicate when he has to pee, but poop is clear, then I take of the diaper and put him on the potty. We have had our successes... He then looks at his "work" and we flush it together (he likes to pull the toilet's trigger). There are weeks though that he doesn't want anything to do with the potty. I do more and more let him run around without diapers... And seeing accidents he is starting to understand where pee comes from, and I think that's important to make the connection!!!

We do take him to the bathroom with us, either of us, to explain to him what a toilet is and what you do. I read a couple books about it and that's the consensus to really let your kids watch and learn. At some point in the toddler years they will reach the phase of wanting to be like mama/papa and then they want to use potties instead of diapers! ;)

My niece was verbal early on which made it easier. At 21 months she said NO MORE DIAPERS. Off they went to Target to buy training pants (those underpants with extra padding in the crotch) and she had very little accidents. The potty had been around for a while but she didn't want to use it til that one day that she decided to get rid of diapers. Within 3 months she used the toilet instead of the potty (with that toddler attachment and a little step stool)...

Wow to the Wadeworth comment... Some people just have to work! Sure I was in daycare and loathed it, but either that or being homeless??? Money doesn't grow on trees! I'm ueber-grateful that I can stay at home with Jona for as long as I want too. That's the one thing about the military I like (safe job and relatively good pay - sure less than we had before, but a lot of it is tax free so that makes up for the difference in pay)...

Stef, We introduced the potty to Zaid at 15 months. He knows what it is and what its for. He tells me "potty" all the time but isnt ready yet. He wakes up at night and nap soaked and my ped said the first sign of potty readiness is waking up dry. I am not gonna rush it. Sure I would love to not buy diapers but alot of my friends pushed their kids and they regressed real bad. Sof also takes Zaid to the bathroom alot. Zaid always asks to flush lol. We will probably try being bottomless in the summer too.

I am having the same trouble with Eman. He is going to be 3 in February and he isn't full potty trained. Maybe about once or twice a day he will rush to the bathroom and sit by himself but if I constantly remind him, he won't do it. I have started anouncing to him when I have to go to the bathroom. I know, it sounds weird but it is kind of working. I don't know if it is true, but I hear boys are more stubborn when it comes to toileting.

Thanks everyone! :)

Yeah no stitches, just a small tear that healed up quickly. He also came out with his hand up to his face, so I had that to push out as well as the head at the same time lol.

Autumnchik, I have a friend that has a Declan :)

That name is so much more common in other countries. Here, most people seem to mangle it at first (at least in our small town).

Stef - we have a potty for Declan, but he isn't really interested in sitting on it yet. He is very interested in watching us go to the bathroom, and we encourage that. He likes to wave bye-bye to the peepee in the toilet. I think he is also starting to identify when he is going. We are not going to push it though. Right now, he uses his potty mostly to stand on and throw things in the sink. When he's ready and wants to sit on his potty, we will go from there.

I totally agree Kelly - they'll let you know when they are ready. I never used pullups or training pants with my son, just let him go bottomless for a few days ( as much as was possible) and it only took about a week.

We're going to start with Amirah as soon as I finish up the big costco box of diapers we have...

thanks for all your input~ I guess I will keep trying but our life is so crazy busy right now. He is going to the toddler room as of this semester and they support potty training. So half of the week he'll be encouraged to use the bathroom by his teachers, they even brush his teeth after breakfast.

I wish I could just fast-forward to summertime!!

My parents said I was potty trained between 9 and 12 months! But they cloth diapered, maybe that's the reason.

Susita: that is good advice about the dark underwear. haha.

We haven't really started potty training Kavi yet which makes me feel a bit odd now since I am seeing many talk about it for younger kids. Oops. We have been talking about it for awhile and plan to start very soon. We have tried explaining about the toilet and he can tell us when he pooped but haven't set him on one. I don't think I was potty trained until between 2-3 yrs old. I thought 2 was a good time to really start...now I feel a bit behind. He turns 2 on Feb 1st.
